The red paint markings around what was left of the wheel are generally an indication that things didn't go well for someone. Glad that someone wasn't you.

Thinking about nita and andy and the passing of their trusty Scout ...
I'm sure I've posted this photo of Kaya before, and probably the story too, but. ..
Kaya was my one constant for 15 years. A true companion through thick and lots of thin. Coast to coast, valley to summit, she was there.
A climbing dog of the first order with many dusty roads and craggy bivys behind her, semi retirement found us in a beach town.
She got older and creakier and her last roadie though Big Sur, the Valley and Meadows, and Eastside crashpad living produced many fine memories.
I knew the day would come, and after a year of having to accommodate the dog that never needed accomodating, I layed down on our floor with her as she took her last breath.
I was gutted.
Finally truly alone and lonely for the first time in 15 years. It was December 15th.
I cleaned the house like a meth head. I sobbed and wrote songs. I surfed my guts out.
Slowly, I mended.
Then her ashes arrived in the mail and the hurt came back.
The only cure, I figured, was another roadie. This time to her most favorite place, Granite Mountain.
The place she knew so well, where she'd meet me at the top after a solo. Where she'd wait patiently as we climbed. Where she'd guide out-of-towners down the "trail" after dark.
Well she's there forever, given to the wind at the heart of the mountain. The birds and lizards that suddenly appeared and the tiny purple butterfly that overcame the wind to land on my arm assured me she was home.
It took close to two years for me to consider another. Two years of trying to convince myself that the new freedom would allow me to do all sorts of things I couldn't do with a senior dog. In actuality, it was two years of time passing differently, and no one to pass time with.
Then one day a little black dog showed up at the door. Literally. I made the decision to keep her and off we went to spend the holidays in Tucson. She didn't even have a name yet. She found her spot on top of the folded paint drops, next to the guitar, and for the next seven hours we listened to the Grateful Dead bulleting through the desert.
By the time we stopped for gas the timid black chihuahua from hours ago was now all mine. Following commands and no leash needed. And she had a name- Rosebud, after Jerry Garcia's guitar.
It was also on that drive that I realized the date,
December 15. Exactly two years to the day of Kaya's passing. I immediately believed in reincarnation.
Rosebud has continued to take on Kaya's traits, and is an equally competent climbing and road dog.
I hope with time a new and equally as wonderful a dog as Scout finds its way into nita and andy's life.
We can never replace them, but the next one will be the start of a whole new story.
