i especially like this entry from Tacos' blog, linked from the facebook cause page. In the most recent entry, May 31st 2009, she writes:

"climbing Eldo. good hard sand stone . very nice routs. so fun. just hard to find place to stay because kind of Big city and finding climbing partner. problem is animal is crazy hungry in there . bite nice packs then eat food then poo and pi in there. oh, so bad. pack hanging from the tree is not enough. need plastic or metal Box for the food."

hey there kunlun... say, now these bear-critters will be famous in japan, after this gets out...

thanks for the interesting, true, but sometimes scary "nature" at its "hungry self" share...

"get well tacos" ... :)

I just visited Tacos and wanted to post a couple things on her behalf. First, she spoke to her mom and the cost of the trip home is actually going to around $60,000 they believe. Second, she wants to tell everyone "thank you" for their generosity. She has quite a bit of movement in her left leg and some in her left arm as well. Her right extremities have minimal movement, but she does have feeling. She's pretty bored today since it's a holiday which means minimal staff and no therapies, but in good spirits as always!

I know exactly what she means! Perhaps we encountered the same damn varmint.

It's encouraging to see this outpouring of support, amidst the hard times Tacos is facing.
She sounds like a joyful person.

Time for a bump, plus reminder that vlygrl has the account information if you want to make a donation.

If you happen to have a Wells Fargo account yourself it's even EASIER than going down to your local branch - you can do it online. No fees, either. It took me a total of less than 5 minutes, and it only took THAT long because I forgot my password and had to go through all the verification stuff.

Is Tacos still flying out tomorrow? If so, anyone seeing her please pass along my best wishes for smooth traveling!

Trad,

indeed time for a bump. I just called Tacos at the Wyoming Medical center. If any friends wanted to do thew same I'm sure she would appreiciate. # is 307 577 7201 (Fugimoto Satakos). Give her a call if you want to be inspired. She is such a trooper. I cannot fathom being in her position and dealing with it as bravely as she is. She wanted me to relay her huge appreciation for all the postcards, thoughts and prayers people have directed to her. I can tell you from speaking with her that these have had a big positive impact for her.

A status report; Tacos is being flown back to Japan on Wednesday morning. She joked that only she can help her situation, no more letting someone else put up the rope on hard routes. I hated to give her a task but told her she needs to give us an address/ contact info in Japan as soon as she knows it. Given all the obstacles..as small as not knowing how she will get an internet connection to wondering what kind of rehab the Japanese public health system will provide...Tacos has amazing courage. Will inform as I get the particulars. If anyone still wanted to donate to the cause it looks like her flight will be expensive with a nurse and EMT going with. All these bad events remind me that many times we are lucky and it could be worse. Tim

Tim, thanks for your update. Sounds like she's dealing with these challenges in the same
spirit that shines through in her photos.

Tim: Yes, please let us know (or remind her that we want her to let us know) what her email address will once she's home.

I think all of us who ever met her, and probably many who didn't, would love to be able to keep in touch and continue to send her our good wishes.

And for any of you who haven't been through rehab from a serious accident, believe me, support from friends, acquaintances, and fellow climbers is an incredibly uplifting thing.

I just spoke with Satoko ("Tacos") for about an hour on the phone. She is in very good spirits at the Regional Medical Center in Casper, Wyoming. She has regained more use of her lower extremities, and will be transported back to Japan on July 8. Her brother just arrived from Japan today to help with arrangements.

If anyone wishes to reach her, email is Tacos_Satoko@yahoo.com. The phone at the hospital, 307.577.2646, goes directly to her bedside.

This is a strong and spirited girl, and she will prevail. Peace to all,

Thanks for keeping this on the front page everyone, and thanks for the update Polar Sun!

About 6 people have contacted me for bank account information for Tacos (I won't embarrass you, thanks, you know who you are!) -- and if anyone does NOT want to use paypal (to satoko_715@hotmail.com ) you can still contact me. Even though she's flying out on Wednesday, that doesn't mean that flight and the other travel expenses are paid for.
