T*R,
You're right, of course, about the need to find a long-term
lifestyle solution. You're also right that society's standards
are not necessarily the best source of inspiration. The way you
look to someone who doesn't know you is of minimal import
compared to the way you feel hiking to that crag, or pulling
moves.
I let myself go to pot several years ago. It has taken (is
taking) much longer to get back to what was MY standard than I
ever expected. I'm not young anymore; circumstances have changed
such that I'm about guaranteed that I'll get less exercise than
in my younger days.
Last year was my best in quite a while, and I want to duplicate
that, if not improve.
I'm looking at this challenge as an admittedly artificial kick-
start to climbing out of my normal Winter slug-ness. I want to
be at my August 2007 weight by Valentine's Day. I don't think I
have to hurt myself to get that done. I don't want to dread
approaches anymore.

Bummed I didn't see this in time. (I JUST got my internet repaired after one month of it not working.)
It looks like a lot of fun. I want in on the next one! Good luck everyone.

Good luck everyone!
But wouldn't a real challenge be a 6-week one between mid-November and Jan 1st?
(evil laugh follows....)

SS, did I miss something? Why the hostility? Did someone call you out?
We're all working for the same goal right? To be healthy and happy with ourselves and with any with any luck maybe even climb stronger.
I think what Steelmonkey was trying to articulate is that sometimes it takes a challenge or a kick in the butt to get started. Congratulations, you started on your own. Me, I don't do f*k all unless there is a DC attached. Too Lazy I suppose.
So whether you're in our little challenge, on your own program or better yet one of those wicked souls who don't require a program because healthy IS their lifestyle (we've all seen photo's of Tarbuster's wife, right?)I wish you success and good health.

SS-
I know it's hard to not feel self-conscious about weight. And even more so around climbers, I think. A friend once told me this (it was related to something else, but I think it applies): no matter how much you think other people might be looking at you and judging you, you are guaranteed that you are paying much more attention--and therefore being much more critical--than any of them are.
I'm always loosely trying to get in better shape. Of course sometimes that's as small an effort as one less beer. For me, this here DC is just a way to make it marginally more entertaining. Misery loves company. I wish I could say that I've made as concerted effort at lifestyle modification as you have!
Chin up, you're beautiful!

There are several million folks in the US - all are not going to like us. And all are not going to think we are hot (i.e., that we are ugly duckings).
And you know what? We'll feel the same way about them too. Don't worry about what others feel or think about you. Work on/focus on what you think/feel about yourself.

Things are going okay so far. I've knocked off about 10 lbs over the last few weeks and am aiming for 10-15 more, although things are slowing down. I've been eating mostly fruit, veggies and beans (and a little alcohol). The challenge comes at a good time. I needed more inspiration.

Hey,
I use a pretty good site to track calories and exercise. It is a bit gay and up with peopleish to the point where you may gag a little when signing up but it is a pretty good tracking tool and it is free...

Fluke weigh-in this morning has me 4.8 pounds lighter. The major factor is that I screwed up dinner and it was just too dried out to finish. And since it was a rest day mostly, I forgot to drink enough water.
So far:
Day 1 weigh in - 131.2 (sushi and beer the previous night)
spent the day testing fancy new telemark gear
pilates
granola for bfast, turkey sandwich on spelt, pad thai for dinner
Day 2 weigh in - 129.0 (glycogen loss?)
xc ski 1.5 hours
pullups
granola, salad for lunch, quinoa pasta with a couple bites of turkey italian sausage
*really* low energy in the afternoon, felt depleted
Day 3 weigh in - 128.2
pullups and pilates
eggs and veggie scramble, salad for lunch, overcooked salmon, dried-out-rock-hard baked potato, undercooked green beans
Day 4 weign in - 126.4
planning on pulling off baseboards and installing cork flooring, hoping to find some time for something aerobic

Dang yal, I'm working 12-15 hours a day outside, and trying to feel hungry at least half the day. Working like a charm so far. Any body who wants to get on this plan can come help us build houses.
I'll just never be skinny. I've pretty much starved for months staight on big trips, and still came back with a gut. My body just tries so hard to keep it's last reserves.
These days I focus on feeling healthy and climbing well as indicators of whether I'm in shape.

HI PROD, THANKS FOR THE HUMOR IT HELPS
IT WAS IN THE EARLY 90,S AND I JUST MOVED TO LA FROM CHICAGO AND STARTED DATING A LOVELY GIRL FROM CHINA WHO HAD ALSO JUST ARRIVED TO CALIFORNIA. SHE WAS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER AND I WAS A PRINT BROKER.
SHE HAD CALLED TO TELL ME THAT SHE WAS COMING OVER IN THE EVENING. I ASKED WHAT SHE HAD DONE ALL DAY AND SHE SAID SHE WENT SHOPPING AND TO THE FURNITURE( FORTUNE) TELLER.
WHEN SHE ARRIVED , SHE HAD A PACKAGE IN HAND AND WITH A BIG SMILE SAID " I GOT YOU A PIE." I SAID " THANK YOU. WHAT KIND" SHE REPLIED " I THINK A FAT GUY LIKE YOU WOULD ENJOY ANY PIE" IT WAS PEACH .
