more on the kissing couple
“How’s that for making love, not war,” astonished dad Brett Jones declared on his Facebook page, telling the world that the famous Romeo in a Vancouver riot picture is his son.
If you haven’t seen it, Scott Jones, 29, is lying on a street locked in an embrace with girlfriend Alexandra Thomas as they’re flanked by riot police Wednesday night.

“She had actually been injured,” Brett Jones told the Star Friday morning from his home in Perth, Australia. “She had been knocked down by a shield” from the riot police.
“He lay down next to her to comfort her. She was crying and he just kissed her to calm her down.” http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1010521--vancouver-kissing-couple-identified-see-new-photos-inside?bn=1

As I said earlier, this event will cause deep and lasting damage to Vancouver
I don't think it will. There have been riots in Vancouver before and no one remembers or worries. Same with other places. Do you associate Montreal with hockey violence? The Richard riots 55 years ago were pretty wild, but didn't cause deep and lasting damage to that city. Pick a big city just about anywhere and you'll find that this kind of thing happens.
All big urban agglomerations have problems. Vancouver isn't as big as some, but it's big enough to have problems, and this event isn't going to take it off the tourist map. Young and drunk as#@&%es are pretty much the same in Greater Vancouver as in Greater Anyplace. It's disgusting and scary no matter where it happens, but that it happened in Vancouver shouldn't really be a surprise.

As far as damage goes I drove georgia street the morning after and there were boarded up windows in a few places but otherwise it was business as usual in Vancouver. No damage was readily apparent, the place got cleaned up real good, very quickly.
There were people who came specially equipped, with the express purpose of burning cars, no matter what the outcome of the game. I watched on tv live as the cop cars got torched. A guy came along and sprayed some flammable liquid inside and poof the cars ignited immediately. It was the work of professional rioters. Some of them came pre-equipped with ski masks flammable accelerants .
Vancouver is rife with property crime experts and petty thief's, this event drew them all together for an opportunity to plunder steal under the guise of a manufactured riot. The upside is most of these people have been captured by the sea of cameras in action and their photos are now in the police image database
Even if the Canucks won these people would have acted out the same behaviour. This is one case where I believe the police got it right with their assessment of what went down. And these retards are going to get caught this time.
Edit: tami agreed ! I call them professional rioters and they are the ones that take advantage of every occasion to instill problems

Heard on the CBC this morning that several people have themselves in, and one family dropped their kid off after watching him riot on the news.

The story of the "kissers" photo: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/the-riot-kissers-hes-a-bit-of-a-dreamer-mother-says-of-son/article2065018/
The man is an Australian, comforting his Canadian girlfriend, who'd been knocked down. They apparently were trying to leave the area.
Both the mayor and the chief of police continue to say there isn't anything else they could have done. Given the riot in 1994, and the Olympics, it will be interesting to learn what it is they learned about management of sports crowds in other places.
I'm afraid I disagree with Tami, Bruce et al. Yes, there may have been purposeful rioters/looters, perhaps from the eastside or even (gasp!) the suburbs. But I suspect most were drunken fools, caught up in the event. And that some will be from Richmond, West Vancouver, and other tony places. Entitled louts.

Ken Dryden (yep, that Ken Dryden) comments on what happened:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/riots-driven-by-more-than-stanley-cup-loss/article2064546/
There is a detailed timeline of the events in today's paper, which is full of riot news (http://www.vancouversun.com/);. It's clear that the police lost control of the main "live site", a giant screen outside the CBC building a few blocks from the arena, before the game even started. There were problems with admission, drinking and crowding through the game, and misbehaviour steadily increased. Rioting started before the game ended. Despite all this, the police took some time to retreat, call in reinforcements from suburban police forces, don protective gear, and begin riot suppression.
Given everything, it would have seemed a situation where being pro-active counts for a lot. Sure, have the "meet and greet" feel-good cops at the live site, and hope things go OK. But have reinforcements and the riot squad waiting in a parking lot a few blocks away.
Only a few years ago four heavily-armed goons from the Richmond RCMP tasered Robert Dziekanski to death, at the airport. He was in a secure area, could not possibly have been armed, and was killed. The police attempted to suppress the evidence, and then perjured themselves - they've finally been charged. The Richmond RCMP isn't Vancouver police, but perhaps there are behavioural parallels - Vancouver police also have been accused of misuse of tasers, and of force generally. When the chips were down, they seem to have dropped the puck.

Why is the Vancouver newspaper called The Globe and Mail? Is mail service in Vancouver provided by the newspaper instead of by the postal service?

There are two English-language dailies in Vancouver, the Sun (reasonably respectable broadsheet), and the Province (lightweight but not too tacky tabloid). Plus some Chinese dailies, and the free mini-papers handed out at transit stops. The Sun and the Province have the same owner. There are two other English dailies, the National Post and the Toronto Globe & Mail. The latter is the nearest we have to a national newspaper, although it doesn't have a French edition. The National Post is a lame right-wing creation of Conrad Black's, before he got imprisoned.
Funny you should ask about Canada Post. They're currently on strike/locked out, although the federal government plans to pass legislation to put them back to work. (It just did for Air Canada.) The Conservatives, with their new majority, didn't take long to decide that. Canada Post has been a generally self-supporting crown corporation for decades, but usage is down 17% over the last decade, much of it premium freight. It has significant down-sizing problems.

It's a good thing we have email and the Internet. Of course, if we didn't they probably wouldn't need to be on strike now.
US to stop accepting most mail to Canada
The Associated Press

Updated: 06/17/2011 01:33:52 PM PDT
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Postal Service says it will stop accepting most mail to Canada effective on Saturday night.
Postal officials said they were acting because it appears labor problems being experienced by Canada Post will continue at least into sometime next week.
The post office will continue to accept items to Canada sent by its premium Global Express Guaranteed service, which is delivered in Canada by FedEx Express.

The Toronto Globe & Mail is well-known for telling us that:
a) Toronto is a world class city, and
b) The Rocky Mountains are visible from Vancouver and Whistler.
As a friend puts it, if you have to claim you're world class, you probably aren't. New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Beijing etc don't bother to make such claims.
And geographic illiteracy in an otherwise decent newspaper is inexcusable.

Hey, our hockey players are better than yours and theirs.
And Canada Post goes on strike every 5 - 10 years, for a few days, before the government makes them go back to work, and requires mediation. Hardly the end of Canadian civilization.
ps Did I mention that the training for posties includes being chased by wolves? Forget about dogs chasing the mailman - wolves are much better.

Umm, the subjects of Canadian newspapers, and Canada Post, were raised by others, and I responded as briefly as feasible. Apart from the remark about wolves - as irrelevant as much of what RJ posted about non-existent crowd control devices, and admittedly trolling him - it was mostly on topic.

Inmates of the Pitchess Detention Center, watch your step. If you get out of line, you may get blasted with an invisible heat ray.
The LASD has long been a hotbed of advocates for exotic weaponry — everything from sonic blasters to spy drones. But the Active Denial System has long been of particular interest. Heal calls it the “Holy Grail of crowd control.” He’s been trying for years to get the technology deployed in Los Angeles.

That's because every other middle-aged white guy in Idaho is a retired California cop.
You don't want to think about what would happen to Idaho's economy if California swore off communism.
