I see what you mean now.
They have just made the front page of the New York Times online.
Hockey riots it seems.

CNN has summed it up interestingly in their headline: "Bruins win Cup; riots rock loser city"

Yeah I realized the US perception of Canada as a socialist utopia wasn't quite right the first time I went to Squamish. Lots of local toughs hanging out at the bars looking for a fight, warnings (fully justified) that local thieves would steal anything in or on a car that wasn't welded on, parts of downtown Vancouver that looked like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie . . .

Beautiful place all the same with mostly good people I'm sure.

Apparently we're not as cool as we like to think we are.

It's just embarrassing, really.

I forgot to mention in my otherwise glowing paean to all things Canadian
over on the NHL thread that one of the worst nights of my life occurred in
seemingly idyllic Tahsis (on Vancouver Is.).

Just coming to life over my first cup of coffee and reflecting over last night's events. Haven't looked at the local news yet but am quite sure it's not pretty. I think the reaction of most most of us from these parts including the Vancouver Canucks is one of disbelief, disgust, embarrassment and crushing disappointment and none of that over not winning the Cup.
It's a bit baffling and seemingly without immediate parallel or explanation and people are quick as usual to jump to convenient conclusions and knee jerk reaction. Race and social economic demographics are one of the first places people are looking and when you consider the the complex geography and ethnic mosaic of Greater Vancouver there's plenty of fuel for that fire.
Watching the news last night it seemed the majority of the people involved in the mayhem were Caucasian and I'm not buying the quick blame of Asians or Indo Canadian gang bangers although I'm sure there were some of those too.
Too many people and too much booze gathered in one small area is a recipe for trouble anywhere, particularly around a sporting event on a full moon. I think it's also safe to say that a bunch of these people were going to bust the place up whether Vancouver won or lost. Last night's events were the work of a small group of social misfits, many of them just plain and simply, ignorant white trash in from the burbs to cause trouble. They come in every night and are a blight on downtown Vancouver every weekend, just drive Robson or walk the Granville Mall and they're not hard to find.
I'm not going to try to make excuses for last night's events and I share the pervasive sense of embarrassment and disgust over what happened. I would however venture that very few North American cities the size of Vancouver can claim immunity from such mayhem or bad behavior at some time or the social ills that breed it.
I suggest we avoid trying to find quick explanations that single out race, cast unfair aspersions or make sweeping generalizations here and accept that a few bad apples can quickly rot a good barrel.
Vancouver has taken a black eye and it's likely the city will put an end to large gatherings downtown.
I for one hope the Vancouver Canucks never get this close to the Stanley Cup again much less win it because at face value, Vancouver doesn't deserve it.

Pate, seems to me they were mainly booing Bettman, although they could have
chosen a tougher target. I could be wrong.

Pate,

I didn't see that happening in Rogers Arena last night.
Most of the fans stayed to cheer both the Canucks as they saluted and left and the Bruins as they enjoyed a hard earned and well deserved win.
NHL Commissioner did get booed as he always does and I recall that on more than one occasion the captains of winning teams refuse to shake his hand when receiving the mug.
Don't confuse the BS outside the rink with what appeared to be a very positive and well behaved event inside.

Edit. Your photo was taken outside the rink so keep you facts straight before you call the well behaved people inside losers.

Pate,

I declined to go downtown as I had a bad feeling the shite would hit the fan regardless of the outcome, for all the reasons I mentioned above.
I watched the game at home, teared up a little as our boys left for the dressing room and then watched the Bruins celebrate till the BS outside took over.

Dude in the photo is in a raft of shite as are a whole lot of other people stupid enough to behave that way in front of a lot of cameras.

To be fair..... I was at the garden getting on my work shuttle before the game even started and the ARMY of police and SWAT were there simply because this happens here too. Sh#t it happens sometimes when teams win and when they lose. THe phenomenon is ridiculous but not isolatable to CA in the least.

Go B's! :)

The Punjabi food in Vancouver is the best I've ever had outside of home (and I had a Punjabi mother-in-law for a decade). They don't skimp with the paneer in the Matar Paneer. In silicon valley, you have to fish around in a buffet table to find pieces of it....

I"m sure these two are completely and utterly shitfaced drunk, but I like this one. The imagery suggests a sort of couple's solipsism amidst the maelstrom that's downright romantic. Utter chaos, and they're just focused on each other. Awwww...

As for the rest of it, shameful.
