So who is the real loser in this deal?
If you accept that the nomination of Patreaus to replace McChrystal means that Obama is in a sense doubling down on his Afghan policy, then the losers are the very advisors who McChrystal and his officers belittled.
Biden cannot be a happy guy about this.
The really big decision will be who takes over at CentCom to manage our entire Africa/Middle East operations now that Patreaus has been moved down the chain to Afghan...

Kris nailed it.
BTW what McChrystal did by allowing someone with a known track record for hatchet jobs that kind of access was pure hubiris. Yon's earier assesment of him seems to be correct. He was in over his depth.
He did deserve to get fired.

Afghanistan did not attack the US. Afghanistan did not draw first blood.
Correct, Al Queda attacked us. Al Queda drew first blood on 9/11 and before. We should have focused on them almost exclusively from the beginning. When the Taliban refused to surrender them we should have gone in surgically and gone after Al Queda. If the Afghans wanted new rulers they should be the ones to revolt and throw the Taliban out. We should have only attacked the Taliban if they messed with us during our war against Al Queda.

Actually your own US govt deliberately allowed Al Queda to attack before and during 911.
Get your facts straight.

It has been public knowledge for years in Washington DC that the CIA working with agents at FBI HQ intentionally, deliberately and knowing allowed the al Qaeda terrorists to carry out the attacks on 9/11 which resulted in the murder of almost 3000 people.
It is unfortunately only the Americans public that has not been made aware of this information.
It not like the CIA and FBI HQ actually wanted thousands of Americans to die in these attacks.
But people at the CIA and FBI HQ knew that if FBI Agent Steve Bongardt’s investigation of Mihdhar and Hazmi was not shut down, and Bongardt ultimately got the photo of Walid Bin Attash taken at the Kuala Lumpur al Qaeda planning meeting, Bongardt would have realized that his team investigating the Cole bombing had been criminally obstructed by the CIA and FBI HQ agents and many people at both the CIA and FBI HQ would have gone to prison for many years.
The people at these agencies were just trying to stay out of prison, and it was unfortunate that thousands of Americans had to die to make sure they would not go jail. The CIA tried desperately to keep the fact secret that Walid Bin Attash had been identified in a photo taken at Kuala Lumpur, on January 4, 2001 by the joint FBI/CIA source, and then these agencies carried out many actions to criminally obstruct the FBI criminal investigation of the Cole bombing to hide this information in order to hide the CIA’s culpability in the al Qaeda attack on the USS Cole.
It is now clear that the FBI found this out quickly in the Pentbom investigation and then let this investigation die when they found out that very top officials of the US government and even their own FBI HQ had actually allowed the attacks on 9/11 to take place.

Fattie, the Taliban supported Al Queda, but really they were an accomplice. Guilty for sure, but should we have put all the time, lives, and money into regime change, or should have we just directed all those resources against Al Queda, who are now out of Afghanistan almost completely while we fight an expensive war there still?

Which gov't sites/sources. I thought the gov't did it? Are they implicating themselves?
Wait, lemme guess, it was some obscure, brave whistleblower.

That's a great solution. Perhaps if it is to really work we should stop giving Isreal 6 billion every year, and the Palestinians whatever scraps we throw them.
Seem like that would be staying out of it fatty?

After the bogus Afghan elections we should have started pulling out, not doubling down.
Edit: or at least demanded new fair elections.

Maybe it'll be forgotten that McChrystal was the architect of the highly successful Marjah op that routed embedded Taliban from a hotspot. He was prepping Khandahar for the same.
All the fools thought Marjah would be a bloodbath for the US, but under his brilliant planning, we surprised them with surprise Special Ops and seemingly weird direct insertions that caught the Bad Boyz off guard.
We lost a genius in COIN and general warfare.
There was no military insubordination by McChrystal in the article. A good man went down. We lose. And the troops will probably lose too.
