Carolyn... wow... what a sweet story and an amazing looking little beastie.

I have sort of an opposite story but in a way a similar end. I gave up Sita a while back. It was tough but the right thing to do. The very sweet part of the story is the couple that took her live in my mothers house in Kachina (Flagstaff). They have two other female dogs and apparently it's quite the pack.

The Kachina house is the place I lived for 9 years with Ms. Summit and is an awesome place for a dog to live. Tucson isn't as dog friendly. I think Sita needed something more and I think she needed brothers and or sisters.

A couple weeks back they had to leave town and needed a Sita sitter. P. Envy and Snook are right around the corner so she went over for a weekend visit. Tim says she's the same old Sita.

I miss the little suckah but knowing she couldn't be in a better household helps a ton. I also know that the next time I pass through flagstaff I can borrow her for the day or longer.

Carolyn,
GOOD for you! You've now got a BFF in the truest sense. Treat her well. Get 2 good dog raising books RIGHT now. Why 2? they'll have differing opinions.
you CAN teach an old dog new tricks with love, skill and determination (NOT force, striking or verbal abuse). When I need to, I get Oliver's attention with a loud sharp shout, like a bark.
She needs to know you're the Alpha dog.

No need to spoil her either. Just like kids, it's a balance between spoiling and kind, reasonable discipline. Lots of exercise. Teach her basic obedience such as proper behavior when walking on and off leash. Get her socialized with other well behaved dogs. She'll learn from them.
Basic thing to remember: a dog WANTS to please her mistress/master. They love to learn.
Also teach her to enjoy her quiet time. This was new to me until I visited my niece a couple of weeks ago. They've got a new puppy, love her to death, have read the books, etc. But they won't let her be quiet. As soon as she walks away and lies down, my niece starts to play with her and gets her worked up again.

OK, now that I'm on my soapbox: FOOD: never human food. Most of it is BAD for her (excepting raw vegetables and fruit) and you teach her to beg. Feed her regularly, not too much (most dogs are overweight). Feed her away from the dinner table/kitchen. Never let her get away with stealing food from the coffee table or guests. (discipline her human visitors to not give her food).
'nuff said.
Regular vet checkups, shots, spay, etc.
Have FUN
Foxy and Oliver say HI and welcome to the climber's world

PS: Foxy is another climber's dog. He's away on foreign assignment and Foxy has an end of life illness. She spent three weeks with us and Oliver and had a wonderful time out here in the woods. Now she's back in the city with another good friend and her three dogs. She's being well cared for and will be happy until it's her time to go.

Well I've posted a lot of pictures of sweet old Stella, who's still hanging in there, but today I made a costume for my cat and I thought it was too cute not to share. He's dressed up as skeletor's cat, Panthor, from the He-Man cartoon of the 80s.

Hey neebee, just keep working at them, a little bit every week. The quicks will slowly move back from the tip of the nail.

hey there say, aya.... SAY, that's what i had heard, too...

...and for to walk her, too, and then try to cut, after the walk...'

the trouble is that i adopted her at 6 months, and she was from on the street, so no one had worked with her feet... :(

i can do cat nails, but i can't do hers as to hold her still and cut, at the same time, and they are very very black--so i keep taking to her to someone to do it... trouble was the one gal, i hardly ever see...

but now, i DID find a gal who is nearby and does them for folks, for 5 bucks.... so now, i hope it will go better...

perhaps, too, my hands are not strong enough?? or her nail are far too hard :O

thanks so much for all the "quick" info....
ohmy, i was only savy, as t CATS.... :))

neebee - you can't do them because they're too difficult for you to cut, or because she doesn't like it and struggles? Both problems can be easily fixed with a little work.

If it's the later, read this and watch the video Nail trim article/video http://www.healthypet.com/PetCare/PetsMatter/PrintArticle.aspx?new_key=8c67d191-bc87-4f60-871d-3770848a05d2&nar_key=f48ab952-f738-4fa2-88ca-af5f74ba4f7c&type=VSNP

Dr. Yin is really excellent. I'd recommend any of her articles and videos and books for everyone (dogs AND cats!):

If it's because the nail is too difficult to trim, you might want to try a different style of nail clipper, OR you can use a little dremel to file them down. No need to get the special pet one if you already have one, just the little round sandpaper cylinder fitting will work. This has the benefit or leaving a nice, smooth nail which will be less prone to splitting and cracking.

New family member Baby Norton came into our home yesterday.

Eight week old Miniature Schnauzer.

First night went quite well, he slept right next to me for six hours straight.

Then this morning we went out side to poop and pee, nothing.

Came back in house, and did on the tile floor, easy to clean up.

Poddy training is going to take some time!

He is doing great, and I am exhausted!

hey there say, aya.... i think they are too hard for me, due to wrong tool, and just being hard....

after i fail, she then gets impatient... and then pulls to much, and then gets upset cause her paw is still stuck in my hand... :(

she does not like it much, anyways, so that makes it a more harder chore, too, (being a street dog, thought not sure for how long, most likely she never had anyone do it)....

well, i will go see your links... thanks so much for sharing...

i did see that the lady standing over the dog, (when i went to her house)was better for patty ann marie, than trying to do it when she was laying down, she did not like her feet being pulled all over any-which-way...

wow, i will have to let you know, how i progress here, come spring...
:))

thank you so much, once again... :)

hey there say, norton...
wow, i am setting-in to ramble here:

say, hope this helps, if you need it, as to puppy training for "pee time":
i had to train patty ann marie, by penning her, cause i went to work at that time, and she as a pound dog, she naturally just messed on the floor, :O

when i penned her in a kennel under the table (she still has it, and uses it for her "place" though the door is never shut now) :)

well, when i penned her, it was her "bed"--and most dogs will not soil their beds, so they get the message to hold it, til you take them outside... (not sure if this is "foolproof" but it worked for patty ann marie, and she needed the change-of-mode to get understand that the floor was not the kennel-type thing she was used to)...

if things get to "wet and wild" you can always try that, too... but all norton's cozy blankets etc, let him see he has a special place to call his own--then, if you have to leave during the day, leave him there...

or, at night, if he is with you, take him out like you did, butttttttt:
don't come back in til he messes... :)) *you mayyyyyyyy be out there a longggggg time, :) *if not, then set him in his special kennel, if he whippers take him outside, again...

well, have fun, "daddy" :)
and best of luck to you and good wishes... wow, always is nice
when this "part of babyhood" is over...
:)

edit:
yep, folks, that was "pee time" up there...

now, "tea time" is a whole other matter, as to pup-training... :)

as:
*first comes, "no begging"
and then comes, "drinking without knocking the dad-gum cup over"
:))

just teasinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng.... ;)

WTF? If this isn't proof that dolphins are not only highly intelligent, but also capable of unusal compassion, I don't know what does.

Amazing animals.
