Crowley -- "LEO should be put on a diet, and all it's rangers should trade in their Crown Victoria's for mules."
Well .... as far as the dieting part.
Most of them are fit, lean.
A lot of them can climb 5.12 these days and they do Nose in a day.
No more crown vics as they went to Chevy Tahoe.
As far as mules go, "No way Josey" as they use certified LEO trained horses.

Sounds like the Rangers are singling Ammon out. I just heard that Ammon has been arrested 3 or 4 times by the f#@king rangers. What the hell. I wonder if he will sue them for harrassment.

HAHAHAHA, that fits right in with Ammon did no wrong, rangers made a jumper drown in a river and bad guys should be allowed to run away.
Ammon got caught because he is breaking the law. Ammon gets punished because he puts others in danger.
Go to a MADD meeting and see if you make it out of there talking about drunk drivers being harassed by cops.
Ammon got busted for DUI while on probation for other alcohol violations in 2006 in Yosemite.

Ammon jumps off El Cap, and the gov't and their drone affiliates arrest him.
Meanwhile, illegal wars have killed thousands of troops and hundreds of thousands of civilians...
and the lowest hierarchy of drones complain, babble and drool about how Ammon has broke the law and should pay for what he has done...
We are bound to fall

Back in the 20's, the day of the barnstormers and wing walkers, two Stearman would go into perfectly in line and powered vertical dives and a person with no chute would jump off the upper plane and try to catch the wing struts on the lower plane.
Was dangerous if you wound up in one of the props.
An awesome airplane.

If Ammon was smart he would have;
1) STFU
2) hired the best defense attorney he could
3) hired a civil rights attorney on the theory that the best defense is a good offense
4) continue to STFU
I think I already know how this business is going to shake out.
Big fine, suspended time, and 86ed from the ditch for a while.

I'm guessing if he did request a change of venue, it would be moved to Fresno. He could have a chance if really pursued the tasering as the motivating reason for the change.
Just speculation.

judge is presumed to be impartial, as is the DA, who is only "presenting" the evidence
Impartial judge, usually.
Impartial DA, right next to never.

re: rok's discussion of the legal system.
everyone has a right to a trial by jury. if you insist on it, you'll get it. most lawyers will try to talk you out of it. don't go for it unless you're convinced that your cause is just.
there's a dirty little secret that all the courts and lawyers in the u.s.a. conspire to keep from the public, and that's something called jury nullification. wiki has a good article on this subject.
jesse mcgahey, on another issue, from the YCA website:
"I realize that many of you are probably rolling your eyes at this point about the planning process in Yosemite and the federal government in general, but being actively vocal and involved with this process is your best way of changing the things you don't like about Yosemite and keeping the aspects you love." (my emphasis)
pretty good sentiments. i hope he means it. however, we must note that when the chief ranger decides the agenda of "the planning process" and does not engage the public in determining that agenda, it loses all credibility. a real planning process affords opportunity for the public to intiate issues. that's the real problem with the NPS and most other federal agencies these days. not only is the public out of the loop, but they are discouraged from getting involved in any way that is not controlled. this is contrary to the democratic process. most people haven't seen the real democratic process for so long that they wouldn't recognize it.
like many others who have posted on this thread, my main concern is the use of the taser. was ammon singled out for this, to be made an example of, to strike fear in the hearts of others? wouldn't such use of tasering be illegal?
according to reports here, ammon fled but his girlfriend stayed. in such a case, peaceable law enforcement ought to be a snap. the officer would take the girlfriend into custody, an apparent accomplice to an illegal activity. ammon would surely turn himself in if he has an ounce of honor to his name. might take a day or so. no tasering necessary. ammon did not attack the officer. lethal force was not necessary, either for the officer's safety or the gravity of the offense.

The more I read and think about this incident in particular and BASE jumping in the Valley in general the more I come to these conclusions:
1. BASE jumping does not justify the LEO resources being thrown at it and the penalties for BASE jumping are unreasonably harsh.
2. It is not to the climbing community's benefit to associate itself with BASE jumpers. Doing this has many more cons than pros.
