Hey Mouse,

Welcome to ST land. I do remember a bit about "Strange Brew," none of the details, but sometimes they come back. I do remember the name and that it was down near Stately Pleasure Dome. Cream was my favorite band and there was something about the climb that was both strange and varied (the Brew), if I remember, hence the name. I looked in the old Yellow guide but the route is not there. I have no idea if it is listed in newer guides or climbed by someone else as a first ascent with a completely different name.

In any case, nice to hear your voice, so to speak. Dave’s daughter has posted for him once or twice several years ago—he is a complete philistine, worse than Yvon. He and Suzanne sound like you are doing great. Quite a few early 70s climbers have posted at one time or another under their real name.

All the best,

Roger

Did a difficult (for me) overhanging stem one time and wished I'd named it Sailing Shoes or Feets Don't Fail Me Now from the group Little Feet. Always liked clever use of song names...especially if they're self-deprecating.

When I was just a youngster I climbed Lost Arrow Spire in the City of Rocks, not knowing anything about the real Lost Arrow. If you squint your eyes and just look at the top of it ( the fake one), it almost looks like the real one.

I did a one pitch FA last year that climbed directly behind a beech tree. It basically named itself...

Route 1A. (because it paralleled the beech)

You can only be embarrassed if you care what other people think.

Jaybro noted: there is only one 'bitch muscle'.
and I've actually climbed it!
but I must say I'm still a bit bemused over the name from that namer...

Poodle "themed" names may be one of the most popular for some strange reason.

There were two "Tunnel Vision" routes and two "Meltdown" routes in Yosemite.
One of the Tunnel Vision routes got renamed to "Eat at Degnan's".
Dimitri Barton volunteered to rename the older Meltdown to "The Knobby Wall" - a nice solution.

There seemed to be a lot of those Lowe Routes and Beckey Routes
Never climbed it but "Magnolia ThunderPussy" is a great name
"The Pygmies Got Stoned" still makes me smile

No. He means sidewinder in longs canyon Utah, not the one on pinnacle peak Az, and I'm sure not the one in Josh :)

How about first ascentionists, who shall be nameless,as at least one of them is dead, who reuse the same name in different areas?

Bet there is only one "seven after Quasimodo", and bet it still needs a second ascent....bring a wrench for the belay bolts.

"East Buttress"

my ability to endow routes with distinctive, witty, and memorable names is only surpassed by my inability to climb hard routes.

I will charge hardmen and hardwomen $7 to name routes that they are intellectually ill-equipped to name well. Email me.

"Astrodog" is a good one, btw.
so too is "Polar Circus"
"Moonflower Buttress"

all great names

"I looked in the old Yellow guide but the route is not there."

That's because it fell in love with The Needles and moved there on a whim.

'Strange Brew' (5.8R), The MagicIan.....stellar route I might add.

Well, I think I'll keep it "Thief in the Night" just to screw with the control freaks out there...

I expected a bit more of an adult response from you Slater but I guess that one will do. Now run along and take your Tonka Truck with you...

Hmmm...might be a good inspired route name outta that.
