Little did I want to reopen this thread for the following reason........but my gal and I went backpacking in the White Mountains of AZ to celebrate the fourth. Hiking up out of a canyon, about 7500 feet elevation at least we came across a nice spring running from a side canyon. Next thing you know our dog stops dead in her tracks and is four feet away from this snake. He was in full on defensive/strike mode. They had the standoff. I called her off and she came quickly thank goodness. My other dog is a bit skittish and had no idea what was going on. He almost walked right into this snake twice as we tried to funnel him away from it. Phew...all worked out well.

Anyways, this snake looked pretty green(the photo doesn't show this) but I wanted to ask someone in the know if they could I.D. it. Seems a bit high in elevation for a Mojave??

If that snake were in JT, I'd call it a Mojave Green. In your territory, I don't know. There are so many species of Rattlers.

That would be an Arizona Black Rattlesnake and the picture further above behind the car was a southwestern speckled

Dan,

That's too cool! Are they out by Giant Rock?
I want to go there and play with them!
At first they looked like western diamondbacks, but when I looked closer I could see the green color.

Thanks Snake Trainer. It's fascinating how dangerous animals in the woods/ocean grab our attention. That snake did it's job well. It was very intimidating, yet just wanted to be left alone.

Heading down Geology Tour Road.

They sometimes climb into yuccas to get away from us.

We were playing with this one in Colorado. He didn't like it!

Blitzo,

you know how people get bit by rattlesnakes a lot of the time, right?

I get rattlesnake shots for my dogs every year. I walk in the Buttermilks everyday, and last year one of my dogs got bit on the snout. He made it through with no problems. There is a big den of rattlers about a mile east of the bouldering area.

Just heard about this thread.
I got a similar email (June 10th) with 5 pix of these same snakes.
I asked where these came from. Here is the reply (Not saying I believe it):
"Mitsubishi Cement Plant in Lucerne Valley. Pictures were taken by some workers in the last couple of days."

Here's two photos not shown prior on this thread. In my opinion it does not look too much like the terrain of the said area of Lucerne. But they most certainly look like Mojave Greens. I've killed several when I lived in Landers, CA just east of Lucerne by about 15 miles or so.

Looks like a Mojave to me, Penns not that I really would know, but i think the various environmental catastrophes in Az have put all kinds of things in places they did not used to inhabit.

"There are lots of rattlesnakes at the milks."

There used to be one who set up a dynasty in the bush to the left of the Ironman Traverse, before thoughtful climbers removed said shrub.
