I have never seen this in the wild. These pictures were taken in the Morongo Basin last week. Should be an interesting summer.

aaggghuuahh yuck Dan!!!! Please tell me that the photo was taken at a snake farm in Morongo!
That's exactly why we are walking the dogs on leashes right now. Little Nora likes to put her nose in holes while Russ & I yell at her not to. Cracker on the other hand has seen the snakes (sometimes right in the middle of the road in Indian Cove Campground). Cracker DOES NOT LIKE THEM and is pretty snake aware. Nora on the other hand is oblivious.
That photo is super creepy!

TS-
How did you come across this? Where in the basin were you? Were they threatened by your presence?
I consider myself something of a wannabe herpetologist, but this gives me the willys!

No, I did not take the pictures, They were taken by a friend on his cell phone camera! To be be fair, the pictures was not taken in the Morongo Valley proper. The pictures were taken slightly north of Landers and discovered while hiking. He claims they are Mojave greens in there. I have to trust him on that. My guess is that the hole in the lower left of the first picture was their nest.

I've seen this before. It's the leaving of the den or convention hole in the spring. They are receiving their assignments to the climbing routes they will guard until fall. They will scatter to the four winds and shed their skins and be blind for a short period. They have been observed raping garden hoses and climbing ropes while in this dim sighted state.

TS-
Are you sure this is in Landers, CA? I passed the image on to a good friend of mine who is a serious herpetologist, and here's what he said:
"Thanks for the pics but they were not taken any place in California. Those are Great Basin Rattlesnakes at a den site most likely in Colorado or the mid-west plains states."
He says he is 100% sure they are not Mojave Greens, too.
This would sure make me feel better walking around JT...!

Got those pictures in an email from a buddy may 26 and the attached pictures say "mothers day 08" and the email claims they were taken somwhere in Wyoming.
might make sense that it's somewhere in that area with the short sagebrush in the photo's. Where ever this is, it's still amazing.

Apogee,,
You and your friend may be correct. I have no idea. This came to me in an email from a friend in Lucerne who claims to have taken them. I can't vouch for their origin. He works at the cement plant in Lucerne and has passed on some pretty wild stuff in the past. I tend to trust everything I get in my email:-) So I guess I would still watch my step.
