Sometimes cragging days end prematurely. Annie lost the genetic crap shoot that comes with a full breed and recessive hair color.
Although the backyard adventures were the usual puppy stuff
and first couple years at the crags were excellent,
she's now about 90% blind at age 5 thanks to a degenerative eye condition.
The adventures are once again in the backyard or on level hikes with a leash primarily.
And, yet, she still recognizes the smell of the day packs and never misses the rattle of the leash.

Euroford -- that's quite the regal expression, your caption sums it up. Especially right after
some mutt looking happy in the dirt.
Nita -- Jack went in an airplane once, but he's never been in a boat. Dogs do love to ride.
Cowpoke, nice arc your photos tell. Annie looks like she still gets a lot out of life.

i love that dog park up in Louisville, nice park, lotsa nice dogs. one of the nicer spots jersey and i have been too.
i wish he wasn't such a maniac, can't have him off the leash unless we have a fence around!

"(CNN) -- A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field
in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.
The abandoned infant was found in a field with this dog and her newborn puppies.
A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night
to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.
The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies,
said Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires.
The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.
The dog had apparently carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him
to where the puppies were huddled, police said.
"She took it like a puppy and rescued it," Salcedo said.
"The doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died.
"The dog is a hero to us."
Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata,
said police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m.
Wednesday with the baby, who doctors say was only a few hours old.
Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises
and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said.
The next morning, the child's mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital
and told authorities that the
8-pound, 13-ounce infant is hers, Melia said.
The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment
and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.
The child has been transferred to a children's hospital
in La Plata, 37 miles from Buenos Aires."

Recognizing my sentimental nature, a friend loaned me this book a few days ago for reading
on a long flight. My plane never left the ground that day and instead I spent 8 hours
standing in lines at a foreign airport ... but I read the book cover to cover and it kept
me smiling despite how the day was going. I recognized just a few of my own dog's
experiences in Kerasote's well-told story of Merle. Anybody else here read this gem?

i read it a few weeks ago and cried through the last two chapters...i, too, spent the last few days of my dog's life sleeping by his side, hand feeding him, and cleaning up his bowel movements...it was the least i could do for all that he had given me

From all the unleashed outdoors-activity photos we get around here, like eKat's water trips
or Bob D and his deserts, I'd guess there are a fair number of ST folks who could identify
with the author's perspective on sharing life with a "free-thinking" dog.
The book hooked me from about page 2, where a stray wanders up to the author as he's
gearing up for a raft trip, and says to him,
"You need a dog. I am it."

What does Skadi think of guitar making, and guitar music? Just curious - dogs can hear a lot more than we can, and many musical instruments produce a lot of undertones and overtones.
Not to drift too far (I did post a dog picture upthread), my father is quite musical and crafty, and has made things like a viola, a violin, and a harpsichord. Sadly, he's now quite hard of hearing. I don't remember if any of his dogs was musical.

We useta have a dog who loved recorders, flutes, any kind of wind instrument --
she'd howl along very softly. And another who joined every coyote chorus, eager
for his Jack London moment. But what that dog most liked singing to was a
recording somebody had given us, "Songs of the Humpback Whale."

Hmmm, I didn't post a photo of a dog on this thread after all. So here's Emma the dopey dog, my father's chick magnet and faithful companion. She was his third dog, and is wearing a vest knitted by my mother. Emma died in April - she was 13.
