Actually, a muffled motorized drill is significantly quieter than hand drilling.

I was just recently banned from cascadeclimbers.com for posting some threads on bolting wilderness areas with power drills. nice...apparently you can't have opinions or voice them to loudly over there.
Specificaly the case I was bringing up is a route called "Infinite Bliss" which is supposedly the longest sport route in North America. Put up in the Wilderness on rappel, with a power drill. The FS knows all about it and apparently isn't too happy.
My opinion is that this route should be erased.
How long is it going to be before "Infinite Bliss's" Start poping up all over the country?

Hello,
Using a power drill in the wilderness is poor judgement.
Infinite Bliss route- I was also part of that discussion on cascadeclimbers and banned because I had been too opinionated..
Anyway your home crag is next. Some Johnny will go and buy a drill and get some bolts and start playing tic tac toe. The advance in technology and use of it in the wilderness completely undermines the whole reason there is a wilderness.
I hope somebody erases that IB.
Nice to see ya lambone

"One person suggested the feds don't use power tools in the wilderness. That is patently false. They use choppers and chain saws frequently."
FWIW, they are required to get a special permit to do this and have some out-of-the-ordinary reason to get that permit.
This came up recently down here after a major fire on the mountain last year. They were delayed a bit re-opening the burned areas while they waited for those permits so they could use chainsaws to clear out trees that were in danger of falling on trails and the like.

here here mimi
but one minor complaint
"a power drill instead of on stance"
this comparison is inapposite
I stance power drill. They aren't mutually exclusive.
cheers,
(seriously I'm drinking Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale)

Uh Mimi, Urmas isn't what I would refer to as a "gymrat sport climber", and while he does sport climb and I'm sure pulled on plastic, he is also responsible for FAs on Watkins, Half Dome and other stuff. Just wanted to clear that little tidbit of info up.
Oh yeah, good to see ya on here. Been a while since Walt's Memorial party by the river eh?
Cheers

You're right Munge and Pat. I retract the gymrat comment; bad assumption. I am not familiar with Mr. Urmas climbing history. And it can be pretty darned difficult to drill on stance with a drill of any type.
