The rangers are there to protect the legitimate tourists. You guys look like criminals so get used to it. Bruce that is so insightful about cops putting people into three categories: clueless good citizens, dangerous criminals, and other cops. In your model, I would note that their informants are not cops, they are more in the category of criminals.

I actually like living in places with less police protection. In Colombia, the penalty for committing a serious crime is that the victim can easily hire someone to kill you. It works better than you might think. In fact, the police are extremely dangerous and any dealings with them on any subject can quickly turn into getting extorted for money. You can't be a good samaritan and work with the police. But you can do almost anything you want, anything you can even think of. It's the ultimate libertarianism, as long as you don't piss anyone off.

Nooooooo, Mucci doesn't look the same all clean cut. I want my unibomber Mucci back.

back OT...

I always end up bivying outside the valley the night before and coming in early in the mroning and then getting out after nightfall. Works better than dealing with camping in the valley and the cover of darkness seems to help to not get pulled over. idk ymmv

Yo dudes....we, thankfully, do not live in a police state. Yes, some law enforcement rangers, usually the inexperienced ones, tool climbers. I had it happen to me in Camp 4 a few years ago. Yosemite has urban issues not common in other NP's and that leads to a tenser environment.
Most rangers do a good job, let's not forget the Jesse McGaheys of the world.

Yeah I've definitely talk to some really nice ones. And to be honest this guy ended up being alright and letting me off with a warning, but the climber weed profile and his tooling attitude just bothered me.

ok, sorry for being an ignorant as#@&%e...but in my experience...don't most outdoor people/climber (craggers mostly)/backpacker types smoke weed? Stereotypes exist cus it captures commononplace phenomena. I sure as hell don't smoke it, never tried it before. Please educate me otherwise!

I don't.

Don't have a problem with people that do.

Would prefer not to be belayed while climbing at my limit by someone who is high.

Same goes for people drinking alcohol while climbing.

You just have to wonder what's going to happen when cannabis and its derivatives are not just legal at the State level, but at the Federal level as well? Will the 60s paranoia fade or morph into another state of consciousness?

I guess all the search and seizure on the road stuff will disappear. It'll simply be like having an unopened 6-pack of beer in the trunk of your car today. However, driving while intoxicated with a controlled substance will still be grounds for a DUI I'd say. THC testing on the side of the road? I'm sure the technology is in place to implement that.

Marijuana is so associated in the public mind with 60s protest and rebellion, it still has a certain symbolism that is like a red flag for authority figures like the police, Rangers and FBI.

Slightly OT: a friend of mine recently went for a job interview and they told him he had to pass a drug test. No problem he thinks (he race's bikes) so they ask him for a hair sample. Again no problem, but then they say it has to be leg hair and not hair from his melon. And there-in lies the problem, he has been racing and shaving his legs since he was 14 years old and doesn't have any leg hair to pluck.

There is NO roadside test for cannabis intoxication. The ONLY way one can be CONVICTED of driving under the influence is by admitting guilt... or failing a roadside sobriety test.
