Was driving home from the Valley on Saturday night after a great day climbing snake dike with my girlfriend. We were still stoked on the drive home and were reminiscing about the day as we were driving out of the Valley on hwy 120. The traffic was pretty bad but no worries, just jumped in line and was cruising home. When we passed the turn for Tuolomne I noticed a ranger on the side of the road. Typically I would be slamming on the brakes (being honest here), however I was stuck in traffic and I was cruising in a pack of about 4 cars (I was in the back). Anyways about 30 seconds later he lights me up....crap..what did I do? I really had no idea. He asked for my license and registration, asked if I had any weapons, alcohol or drugs...no i didn't he said ok, and said he pulled me over for my speed. I said I was at the back of a pack of cars and really didn't notice my speed. He walked away and ran my info.... He comes back and asks why I was speeding. I said my girlfriend and I just had a great day climbing and were talking about it, and I guess I wasn't really paying attention to my speed since I was just cruising in traffic. Then he say, you were rock climbing? Me, yeah we climbed snake dike it was great. Officer, do you have any marijuana or a medical marijuana card on you? My response to both was no. He then proceeded to ask if he searched the car would he find anything, and I said no (which was true).
OK long winded whining from me here, but it just bothered me that he asked me about drugs in the beginning and then when I said I was a climber he then badgered me about having weed.... I just hate getting profiled
OK END OF WHINING...anyone else ever experience this?

The leo's always lean in and sniff the air dramatically at the very least. Try to cajole you into foregoing your rights without cause at the most. They are trained to do so.
You may have been profiled for your car type and appearance as well. Not as though that is any better.
The main thing is to expect it in all cases and then exercise your legal rights. Know them people!!

I was riding in my buddy's truck when we got pulled over by CHP. The cab was slightly smoky and pungent. The cop went about his business and my friend got a verbal warning for something insignificant. Can't remember what it was, brake light out or some such.

Yup. Have had it happen twice in Yosemite. Once when camping/sleeping at a pullout when I literally could not keep my eyes open on a drive home at midnight....From climbing Snake Dike.
The officer was SUPER miami vice. Grilling us about weed, drugs, liquor. He was visibly agitated when I told him that I don't smoke or drink and have never even smoked a puff off a cigarette. He said "Yeah right...." Then proceeded to ticket us for having a bag of Doritos in the car during "Bear season."
Real jerkjob. He was really, really ticked when he made a comment about climbers having no real jobs and I told him I was a surgeon and my buddy, who was palms down on the vehicle, was a youth pastor and firefighter.
I did, however, break the law. Both in the sleeping without a permit and the possession of Doritos. It was the whole, climbers are druggies and bad guys angle he kept taking that bothered me.
Thanks guys....all yall who are actual climbers and druggies!

When bouldering one night in c4 around midnight, some rangers came up and started looking around by our bags and stuff. When they didn't see anything they left.

profiling of that kind is legal. In testimony, it can be just standard questioning or even based on "officer's experience of x years with climbers in this area."
Main thing is watch your speed in the Yose.
oh, and never admit you weren't paying attention. Inattentive driving is illegal, though I think there are fewer prosecutions because you don't have the handy radar evidence to show 'inattentive.'

Interesting to hear so many similar stories.
He ended up not giving me a ticket after I was pretty peeved about the weed comment. He was nice enough to listen and realize that giving me a ticket in that situation was BS (back of a line of cars and barely over the limit), so I am thankful for that.
I didn't get his badge number after he left me off. I was just ready to get out of there
You may have been profiled for your car type and appearance as well. Ok...so i need a hair cut haha, and it probably doesn't help that I drive a WRX

Whenever you are unhappy with an LEO and especially if you have cause, make sure to report them. It does go in their record. They do get reviewed. If there are enough reports it will cost them their job.

Too funny, was it the skinny kid with the bad acne? I was driving 120 this summer, long straight section. Ranger passed me in the opposite direction, i was doing 55, no biggie i figure. Dude chases me down and asks if there is anything in the car I need to tell him about. six wise azz retorts come to mind, but the ticket book was not out so I kept it to myself. He then went through a laundry list of contrband, starting with pot and progressing to explosives, at which point I busted out laughing. I gave him my papers and he ran my license. when he returned to the car he resumed the contraband interrogation. I was puzzled because I am 52 with a spotless record. I finally start to open the door and told him to search the car. He declined but he finally told my he was suspicious because i was evasive when I answered him, specifically that I did not look him in the eye. I think they sent the LEOs to a seminar. Waterboarding is next.

and the
hang trumps everything else....start exploring, lot's of unfettered rock out there.

I have been climbing on the Sonora Pass a lot lately, way more laid back. I passed that highway 120/108 intersection too many times and Yosemite temptation got the best of me last weekend. I also got tooled by an angry British dude in little yose campground the night before too, but I won't get into that....but anyways spot on donini

Why do they even care? What is it that they actually do? No SAR no traffic control...just drive around and be jerks? Haven't ever met a cool one. Been busted twice by lame ones. They are just glorified cops in a place that doesn't need em.

Always refuse the search.
if they say they smell pot, tell them they smell like beer.
Chances are they're loaded too.

LOL Jeremy.
Micronut I remember reading about that in your snake dike report. Funny it happened after the same route, and lame that it happened in the first place. I like that you shut him down on the "jobless climber" notion haha.
