My wife and I flew in Asia when we lived there quite a bit. Both business and pleasure. The quality of service there is magnitudes greater than than domestic US. As are the airport experiences (Cathay's Marco Polo lounges tend to be pretty awesome). Maybe it has something to do with the majority of flights being international by the nature of the thing. Local Chinese carriers, like China Eastern are a different story…. I swore I saw people trying to stuff chickens and ducks into the overheads on one flight. And saw the wingtip touch ground on landing in Shanghai!
Cathay Pacific has always been a superb experience for me and my wife. Singapore is very good too.
Surliest flight attendants ever had to be an international Northwest ("Northworst") flight I took back in the mid-nineties. In general, international long haul service seems to trend better than domestic even for the same airlines. US Domestic is just nasty and rough as has been well documented here. Upgrades to biz or first do ameliorate a bit.
I did just fly Virgin America to Boston from LAX with two of my kids. That was pleasantly surprising and civilized on both legs.
Changi in Singapore is a great airport. And Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok on Lantau is pretty good too.
Some have said that they like Thai. Maybe it's just me and my wife, but I have found them terrible in the past and avoided that airline. But maybe it's improved over the years.
