Last week, on Wed, I was stuck in Dulles while flight after flight was delayed or cancelled... I bailed and had myself rebooked on Virgin America
I got home late but I got home... Albeit totally stressed
Today my first flight delayed beyond my ability to make a connection in Chicago... So I rebooked on a later flight. Now that one is delayed while the maintenance crew checks out an engine... Facing a stay in the airport and even more drama tomorrow
Take my advice
Don't fly United

Gotta say that the SFO and IAD are two of the worst airports to work with on any given day. Folks here in the NW generally know to avoid flights through SFO like the plague.

If you think united is bad in the U.S., you should fly their international route to Japan!
Their latest outrage which we put a stop to over here through the power of Facebook, is that a mere week after getting the U.S. government contract to fly all military and government personnel to Japan and Korea, they hiked the cost of bring family pets over and back from $300 to $3,000 -a fee which the military members have to pay themselves.
Thanks to the Today Show and others and thousands of people signing petitions on behalf of military families and their pets, they were forced to rescind that policy.

Make no mistake, Continental bought United. It was not a merger. The CO computer system, Shares, is older than Apollo, circa 1958. If one misses one character on an entry, good luck. (I'm sure you have seen the hunting and pecking.) The system MIGHT be updated, partially, by the end of the year. (Virgin bought the previous, rather intuitive, United system, Sir Branson knows a deal) So goes the unfortunate traveling public, and the attempts of agents to help them. SFO, et al, will be a nightmare for a while.

Looks like we have a good chance at flying
Hopefully the engine's good enough to get us to SFO

This was quite a few years ago, but I flew a United flight from Denver to Burbank and there were four passengers on the plane. We got pretty good service on that one. I like the the little windmills in the subway tunnels at the Denver airport.
What's the world coming to? Airplane tickets are skyrocketing. Customer service has crashed.

I recently had a bad UA experience, flying from PDX to Reno. I overheard a few conversations of employees and it sounds like the computer systems between Continental and United don't jive at all (as mentioned up thread) and it's going to be a mess for awhile.
If I can avoid mega airports, I do. So much easier flying out of a smaller airport, like Reno than the CF that is SFO or the worst, ORD.
I don't understand why you can't get so much as a lousy newspaper after 9 pm at SFO. Place is shut up like a convent.

Jumping on the "United is shit" band wagon here...
Watched those jack wagons toss my miles in the tank.
Watched the Tarmac for a United flight leave a piece of luggage in the rain on the pavement for about an hour.
Don't fly United.

United's woes date from when the inmates/patients took over the asylum.
I used to fly United a lot BITD- mainly 'cause I got free tickies. I don't
enjoy flying anybody any more. But y'all ain't suffered until you've flown
Aeroflot or Aerolineas Argentinas. The latter has the hottest flight attendants
I've seen but that is the only good thing about that operation. Did I mention
they didn't even come around to pick up the lunch trash on one flight? LOL!
Plane looked a refugee camp when we landed.
OK, so I must admit I did enjoy going First Class to Argentina on American:
