I quit a pack a day habit a few months ago. Granted, I'd "only" been at a pack a day for 8 months and not 10 years, but still, that's a lot.
I used an e-cigarette for about a month at first. It almost completely replaced regular cigs right away. Once my cough went away and my breathing improved, the next step was to start working out hard and often. I knew if I made a change like that to my life, smoking would be too incongruous to also be in there.
Then eventually, though i'd planned to ween down on the e-cig, it simply broke, so I just jumped off nicotine altogether. It wasn't all that tough, actually at that point.
Now it's been about 6 weeks. I've smoked a few here and there, such as bumming one from a friend when out, but I haven't bought any and have gone from 20 a day to about 10 a week.

Silver, I just trail run more because I really can't stop eating since I quit chewing. Hopefully as I clean out I'll Become less in need of replacement behaviors. I'm committed to be finished and running helps burn the extra calories that is screwing with my climbing endeavors. I just turned 50 this year so it's about time I get more wholesome. Climbing with tobacco since I was 16. Aaarggg! Like Brandons sentiment, I hope I dodged the cancer bullet. I'll probably have a coronary now due to becoming a fat ass. Slabs here I come!

Keep up the good work everyone!
Getting that nicotine monkey off my back was tough but very worth it.
Your life won't be determined by the need to supply your body with a substance any more, so stick with it.
Weight gain can be temporary. Cancer is forever.

Now problem Silver I wish you Luck and Strength. My Kids are older now but I remember when my 3 y/o daughter asked me why do I eat "Black" and could she have some, damn near choked when I heard that one. Another chew indiscretion involved a neighbor coming to our house when we first moved in with our newborn to welcome us to the hood. I had just gotten off of a long shift, had already had a beer and was spitting into the bottle and laying on the couch watching the kid out the corner of my tired eye as she swings in her swing chair. I welcome the new neighbor in and offer him a seat on the couch where my beer bottle of spit was sitting on the floor near the couch. Well he walks over to have a seat and kicks the bottle over and it lurps up onto his foot and ankle. He was wearing flip-flops and the chew was infused with viscous luggi. I was mortified and slightly uncomfortable. Should have quit then and there.

kinda losing count but tomorrow i think is double digits, 10 days. REALLY want to go outside and suck one down but i am not going to. lost 3 lbs but thats cause i also gave up beer (oops, slipped tonight on beer) and the ganj.
props to you guys that have gone a distance. crazy ass sh#t how that f*#king weed keeps calling and calling. im just damn motivated to make 14 days.

I've been a smoker for the last five years. I'm just getting over the flu and I haven't had a smoke since Saturday... I'm thinking this might be a good opportunity to quit. I mean, the first few days are supposed to be the worst right?

I couldn't have quit any of the times I quit without nicotine gum. Hats off if you can go cold. The only way I got it to stick eventually was Wellbutrin. Makes the tobacco taste like campfire dirt & kills the buzz

I failed.
I'm building a house right now. 7:00 start time, so only time for coffee on the drive in. Nobody smokes or chews on the crew, so there's no place for it on the job. I get home and have a chaw.
I'm keeping it to a minimum, but it's still unfortunately a part of my life.
On the flip side, I'm not a slave to it, I have no cravings during the day at all. It's just another tobacco free workday.
Congrats to all of you who successfully kicked for good. I'll join your ranks soon.
EDIT; I have to emphasize the fact that I truly don't even have a thought of wanting tobacco crossing my mind during the day.

No body grew up dreaming about smoking and drinking. You're a pariah now if you do either, a loser and and chump. I was all of those things and more, and the only thing better than nicotine is quitting. Once you set your mind to it, you're finished with it. As I've said, I felt like I was on LSD for the first week. I used to struggle with stopping till I understood I wasn't really committed to giving the whole thing up.
Good fortune to all who try. Not many can do it, I am told. Such a shame to die from what was so good at the start.

Last chew of Copenhagen, Dec. 31, 2010. Almost killed me, my wife needed a TRO for the first 2 weeks. Chewed since I was 12 growing up in the South. Still miss it often, but can't go back.
Good job all quitting that shyte! Stick with it...

Mister E, I don't think Largo was sayin that about smokers/chewers, just pointing out that society in general kinda tends to think that way, and the attitude is becoming more and more prevalent as the stigma grows in step with the increasing number of non-smokers... I was on the tobacco tit for 10 years myself, quit, slipped and repeated 4 or 5 times before it "stuck"... It's tough for some, easier for others, all folks react differently to the lack of the nicotine I reckon... In any case, just keep truckin' till you find your particular "key" to quitting for good... I admire anyone engaging in the battle to quit... Congratulations on the decision to quit, all of you.

If you only smoked like say 3 ciggs a day, maybe five, aw feck how about 13.2 on average. I'm a loser baybee, so why don't you kill me?
