Hey, lighten up! The ratio of good advice to sarcasm is much higher than you should have expected. Lots of great ideas have been offered with more than one suggesting living out of a van. Is that sarcastic or practical?

I guess you missed my sarcasm in my quote ;-)

I would agree with the previous posters (the alpine et al.). If you don't care about alpine or skiing or general life in the American West, go with the Southeast. Cheap and lots of outstanding rock climbing. And lots of nice looking women too.

Iron Mt., someone in the trucking industry would do OK in the Black Hills. Spearfish is on I-90 has over 500 limestone sport routes from 5 min to a half hour outside of town. We are an hour from Devil's Tower and a little over an hour to the Needles. Probably a couple of thousand routes up to 500ft within 2 hours and a ton of bouldering all with no lines for the most part. 2 hours to the Big Horns, 3 hours to Ten Sleep, 5 hours to Cody, 6 hours to Lander, 5 hours to the Beartooths, 5 hours to Veda???woo, 6 hours to the front range. Winters can be bad, but there is OK skiing and ice climbing and lots of nice days can be had on south facing walls in the winter. Not much for jobs, but trucking, oil, gas, and mining jobs can be had that pay fairly well. Housing runs the gambit, but there is affordable older houses in many of the small towns in the area. On the down side we are 25 hours from Cali.

The thing about 'the South' meaning the south east, is ya gotta be able to deal with humidity. I grew up in Chicago; ain't ever going back to the lands of swampy air, not something I can deal with, you always feel dirty.

South Dakota and Wyoming have, due to shakey economies, some great cost of living values in places with killer climbing, opportunities most can only imagine. You gotta be one with winter though, on a scale unknown to most in the lower 48...

A house in Hill city and one in 29 palms?
