California is killing me, just too damn expensive. I need a state with cheap rent, decent wages and killer climbing.

Does that even exist?

Thought about that. How much to rent a 4 bedroom house in Raleigh?

Asheville, NC or even better - Chattanooga, TN. So cheap, so much rock. And biking. And kayaking. And hanggliding.

When I was a young man. I solved this problem by going camping full time.

I think you will find that rent tends to follow the job/pay scene.

Plentiful good paying jobs = high rent.

Low rent = scarce jobs, low pay.

There are always exceptions.

Cragman, if you can work from a computer as many can these days (not me), it fits the bill.

We are renting a 3 bedroom in Durham for $895.
Our kitchen is the size of the entire apartment we had in SF (and paid the exact same amount for + $300/mo for a parking space)
3 major universities + high tech and medical in RTP area.
Good music scene and local brews.

Moores Wall, Stone Mtn: 1.5 - 2 hrs
Linville Gorge, Rumbling Bald: 3 - 3.5 hrs
New River Gorge, Looking Glass: 4 hrs
Seneca: 5hrs.
Red River Gorge: 6.5 hrs

There is a rumor that there is even some ice climbing somewhere.

No alpine though.

I'll give a second vote for Nevada. You are almost in California but don't have the state tax to pay. That's a nice savings even if all other expenses are the same.

Move to Kansas and grow some real food for yourself and people and give up climbing.

It's a stupid sport and way of life anyways .....

It's cheap, lots of funky rock nearby. They have a great rodeo, too.

Cheap rent almost always is followed with low wages.
High rent is not always followed by better pay.
