A question for the mountain bike heads: Good idea or bad idea to buy a bike off ebay?
I'm looking at a crazy good deal right now. The current owner says the only ding on the bike is a "dimple" on the bottom tube, plus cosmetics. I'm not gonna be hucking 20 foot drops anytime soon, so might be okay....
I'm still semi poor and a good bike costs as much as a car!

I got both of my bikes off ebay. Both probably would have been ~$5K new and I paid less than $2K for each. And I've been very happy with both.
If you're a decent mechanic, you should be fine.
As for a ding, do you have picture of it? A small ding in steel or aluminum is no biggie. A larger ding/dent, particularly in aluminum might be a cause for concern.

There should be a very clear picture, or you shouldn't even consider it. What reason would they have to not picture it if its very small.
check out mtbr.com classifieds bro. For real.

A small ding in aluminum tube can lead to a fatigue fracture.
Have example at home.

I've already mentioned that twice in this thread, no less two posts above yours.
But seriously. It's the only way for a used bike.

Serious Q... Which would you choose: the SantaCruz Blur LT, or XC, both carbon. Why? (Price not a factor in this scenario)

Jerry - depends on your trails but in general go with the LT unless you are racing XC. For all around use, a trail bike's extra travel and more comfortable body position is the way to go.

I agree for the most part. I'd get the LT as a more versatile rig, and built for it, that rig could certainly destroy a more technical xc course.
{begin rant}
Like a real mountain bike race. Most of the races I've done are designed for roadies who own a mountainbike.... It was Adam Craig, who raced some uci world cup events on a cross bike, and when the cycling board complained (it wasn't expressly banned), he said, "Why don't you make us race a course where being on a road bike with knobbies isn't an advantage."
{end rant}
But sometimes you get to race an event that only a mountainbiker who can handle a bike could win. And then, you're laughing.

Tomac used drop bars for a while.
Specialized even made a drop bar mountain bike in the late 80's

I don't know if he's a member of this forum but Jeff Steber, founder of Intense, is/was a climber.
I had the good fortune to climb and boulder with him in the early 90's. He came out to a bouldering area some friends and I were developing near Temecula called La Cresta.
Jeff's a top-notch guy who builds awesome bikes.
