I have a filter on my TV listing because there are some stations that just don't interest me. I'd rather they didn't clutter the listing on the screen.
Is that "big brother" also?

Well now, this is becoming very interesting.
The option of blocking posts from someone you'd rather not see/read is handy, but I wonder... Will all those who get so riled up about LEB actually use it? I find her posts annoying, and often disruptive of threads I'd otherwise like to participate in. My response has been to never, ever, respond to any of them or acknowledge them in any way. The "don't feed the troll" approach.
However, just as annoying, and sometimes even more annoying and disruptive, is the poo-flinging that her presence ignites.
So, now that the LEB-blocker is available, I'll be very interested to see if all of the poo-flingers use it. That is, despite their avowed disgust at LEB's presence, is that presence somehow necessary for them? She (it?) is a kind of lightning rod, and maybe her (its) presence allows them to discharge their pent-up emotional lightning in a way that doesn't hurt actual climbers on the forum.
Suppose Pate (or anyone) sees me saying something stupid. His natural reaction is maybe to call me out. But it's kind of a lose/lose deal. If he calls me -- a climber who contributes to the forum -- out, then there's bad blood among us. But if he doesn't, then resentment builds up inside him, until eventually he winds up calling someone else out, even more harshly.
But with LEB here as a convenient pressure relief valve, we avoid all that. If one of the tribe pisses you off a bit, no need to start a vendetta, just fling a little poo at LEB, and everybody's happy.
Or, would be happy if it all didn't spill over into the climbing threads. Or the threads where people are actually trying to be serious about discussion of non-climbing topics.
But yes, an ignore function could be just what we need. If only people will use it.

Ok guys here's the super updated version:

Thanks for giving the Paypal link. I offered 5, but I'll give you 10, which would be
the same as buying you two pints including tip, which I would do in a heartbeat.
Cheers!

The funny thing is, you can still do this without ever seeing one of her posts again!

What a bunch of cry babies. If you don't like her posts, don't read them. Pretty freakin simple. There are far more offensive people than LEB on this website.

Nate - As promised, I sent payment. What a nice little windfall for you!
I hope people will use the script to hide those which push their buttons to the point they cannot contain themselves. Personally, I don't have the discipline to turn away from the trainwrecks as they occur, and I don't mean with any particular user. Two people walking down the sidewalks of NY and having an argument? Or a solo on the cel in a brouhaha with their lover? I'll slow down or speed up to stay within range - I am sick that way.
But I DO have enough discipline to not participate. It was a hard lesson won, I'll tell you. And I have had some slips(had one just the other day, in fact). But once one really does accept the fact that our engagement is what enables the abuse to go one, and steps away from reaction - it is quite satisfying.

Jim,
If your television constantly had the same show on every other channel (a show you would not watch) and the remote control had a button to remove those channels from the list, would you not use that button?
Or would you continue to spend your time clicking past stuff you have no interest in watching, just out of principle?
Do you use a spam filter on your email? Or do you allow your mailbox to fill with nonsense because it would be mean to do otherwise?
Let's not make this out to be more than it is. It's modern convenience that helps individuals to filter out what they consider to be noise. Nothing more.

Hey, can you write a script that will block the following people from ever impacting my life or making themselves known to me ever again?
George Bush
My tweaker neighbor who parties too loud
The guy at the post office who leaves 'Watchtower' shite everywhere
Sarah Palin
Mitch McConnell
My wife's boss
Darth Cheney
Hannity/O'Reilly
Anne Coulter
My obnoxious sister (Ok, maybe not her. I'll keep working at it.)
All of those people from that anti-gay Baptist cult
The entire LDS church
The tourons who trash and noise up my little town
There are more (lots more), so better make that script editable so I can add to it whenever someone pisses me off.
Man, that would be sooooooo much easier than dealing with my own issues.

Well i don't see how it's any different from a spam filter or blocking the home shopping channel.
Personally, I'm very good at skimming over stuff that's not important, so I'm probably not going to use the script, but it was a fun challenge to see how fast I could make it for the people who wanted it.
It's cool to go from "seems like it should be possible" to "done, there it is".
If you don't like it, don't use it :)

The script works great at home on OSX and Firefox 3.5.8. Thanks again, Nate!
Without all the added noise, the "Why are those Republicans so wrong on everything" thread is much more readable!
(edit)^^ takes half the time to get thru the thing, simply by removing ONE person's comments :-) maybe i will start to look at some of those OT threads now.
Malemute - I used to run Asterisk (VOIP telephone system) here at home. It can be scripted to detect automated calling systems and respond with a "circuit out of order" tone. Ensures they don't call back.

Hmmm.....didn't think of that...
With such a script, I could surround myself only with people who say things I agree with...think like I do...don't challenge me with any kind of thinking that is unfamiliar to me....yes, I can see real potential in such a tool.
Nothing personal, Nate. I just think that using a script to filter out people you don't like is weak sauce. Especially when most of those who take issue with one person or another on ST tend to engage them regularly and persistently- by their own choice.
You are right, though- you can take it or leave it.

I really do not get why people think others shouldn't use this hide script. Do you LIKE seeing people going off on Lois?
Has it ever occurred to you that the likely reduction in attacks by those people will make LOIS' experience on ST better? Instead of having to defend herself against what are often quite cruel and hurtful posts, she will actually be better able to interact with others in the threads she posts in.
As well, I do believe that there will be some pressure imposed on those who continue to bag on her. They'll be told to STFU or use the filter. And if they continue to go off, they will likely NOT have a host of support for doing so.
I think this is actually a good thing, even though I'm sure it has hurt Lois' feelings. But, has it hurt her any more than the repeated attacks which show no sign of abating?
It should be interesting to see how this change affects Supertopo. I am convinced it will be positive in the long run.

Back on topic.
I've thought about such a script.
I'll look into it. IT's not a bad idea. And I've thought about doing it in the past.
A fund raiser might make the time worth it.
Now back to your regularly scheduled kitten brawl.
