Fluoride,

I'm with you but since I don't write much to bump the climbing threads up, I'm happy to keep it the way it is since the people that actually write are expressing their preference. Instead, since I have a friend who reads this a lot more than I do and only comments on the climbing related threads (and happens to comment on most of them, even if it is just a thanks), I usually just search on his name and up pops most of the climbing related threads.

nuke it. then hk will get all googlecache in the name of thomas jefferson. then it will spin out into another stupid st drama with middle-aged guys running around crying like middle schoolers.

i do have to say that c-mac's dream of getting all the trs out of the mosh pit has tended to dilute the climbing content in the madhouse

Fluoride,
Your thread is actually climbing related, and even though this topic has been slung around for a long time doesn't mean that people aren't interested in seeing the site evolve.

I try to bump climbing content but it has never kept OT stuff off the front page either. Climbers are smart and have a lot of interests other than climbing. I have learned to live with it.

There is no site out there that is populated by the quality of guys we have here.
Tom Higgins, Pat Ament, John Long, Joe Fitschen, Joe McKeown, Ken Boche, Don Lauria, Jim Donini, Peter Haan, Roger Breedlove, Paul Gagner, John Middendorf, Todd Gordon, Kurt Smith, Mark Chapman, Kevin Worral, Doug Robinson, Russ Walling, to name a few.

Yeah it's a mess, but I still love it.
Don't go away.

Hi Beth... Gonna try one last time.

I think this solution would be easy and it would appease everyone, Including Beth..

Go back to the original format of everything on the front page. ( maybe a seperate area for selling )

THEN.. have tags for climbing topics and trip reports. Anything tagged as a trip report or climbing topic would then be posted in the MAIN area AND in their separate area.

This would keep the forum like it is with everything together, yet also give those who are only interested in the climbing topics an easy way to find them.

No matter where a thread is posted to, when it is posted to it would bump it to the top of any section it is in.

Is this clear??????? Am I making sense???? I really think this would make everyone happy and it would be easy.

Edit: Beth.. Folks really do like the free for all which is why your solution gets shut down. I would like to see everyone happy. So how about thinking about my solution and perhaps with your help, it will get some traction..

I agree with Fluoride. However, Chris has zero interest in forming a separate forum or monitoring the Forum beyond deleting objectionable threads.

Keeping up with the Forum requires daily checks to see climbing related threads. The alternative is to see what Chris points outs as interesting once a month and or friends point you to.

Many of the most prolific posters rarely post on the climbing threads. They may read them, but they either have nothing to add--which is normal enough--and they don't have any communal sense to acknowledge that they enjoyed reading the thread. They otherwise are supportive of the folks who populate their threads.

Does any of this matter? In one way it does. A unique feature of the forum is that it has attracted quite a few climbers from the past 50 years who have shared their stories and photos. Everyone seems to agree that this is a great feature of this community. Few of these climbers engage in the non-climbing threads in a significant way.

I cannot get most of my old climbing friends to post because whenever they visit all they see is bullshit about someone's new found discovery that they have an opinion. If someone does post, they usually leave fairly quickly; only a few stay beyond a few brief postings and responses.

Obviously, the most prolific posters think the current system is just fine. They don’t see any downside.

Roger, would you be willing to take a look at what I suggested and tell me if it is clear? Sometimes I don't think I am making sense.

The main page has ALL topics.

Then add a
A tab for climbing topics.
And a tab for trip reports.

All topics go in the main section, but also get put in their respective sections. This keeps the taco as it is, while making it easy for those who only want climbing topics, to find them.

As much as I appreciate the intent of this thread, ironically, it's continued presence and bumping is pushing climbing threads off the front page right now.

Nuke it.

What Roger said is worth underlining. The problem is not that there are non-climbing threads, but rather that there is a small handful of posters who are so selfish that they spoil things for the rest of us.

If you look at those religious and political threads, the ones that run up dozens -- or even hundreds -- of posts in a day, you'll see the same few names over and over and over. And many of those names contribute little or nothing to the climbing-related material that is the raison d'etre of this site.

Why is that? Why do these few people -- they know who they are -- have so little regard for the rest of us that they have to scream in each other's faces all day and most of the night?

Maybe if we started shaming them publicly they'd give it up. Or tone it down.

Let me start: Dr. F, why do you have to post the same message thousands (yes, literally thousands) of times. Everybody who's ever been on this site knows exactly what you think. So shut the f*#k up already. Go climbing and tell us about what it was like for you to breathe air outside your computer room.

Anyone else feel the same? Well, step up and post a request to one of the ranters to back off.

Thank you apogee, I am doing it for that EXACT purpose. If HK reposts it, he's a complete hypocrite that needs to repost ALL nuked posts by all posters on this site altogether or eliminate the nuke option all together. He can't have it both ways.

I'm getting ready to head to work. This thread will be gone within 5 minutes. And it has NO reason to be resurrected. It will only distract from climbing threads.

Thank you everyone for the discourse, but it has run it's limits. Everyone said what they needed to and now let's move along.

And POST CLIMBING THREADS folks!! That's why we're all here, right?

Let's hug it out all.

Beth,

Please don't nuke it. Perhaps the idea of tagging threads and allowing users to filter them gains traction and the problem is solved without inconveniencing every one. A year or so ago I talked to drc about maybe doing a little volunteer work. Sadly he's employed again but I'm sure there are plenty of unemployed web programmers floating around on the taco that might want to help out...

Al least wait a while to see if this idea gains support.

Yup Dingus, I do like to post to the OT threads from time to time. But I try to balance it with TRs, and whatever of value I think I can add to the climbing posts.

No way I want to get rid of OT stuff. I'm with you on the idea that there ain't nuthin' off-topic at a campfire. All I'm saying is that those who post only, or almost only, to the PoliReligi threads maybe ought to take it it somewhere else. Same thing about overandoverandover. How many times do you have to say the same thing before the rest of us get it?
