I had bitchin wave sailing sesh yesterday evening with 15' faces at my LOCAL spot and when I came in there was only one other dude still out and there was soo much aloha on the beach.
It sounds like some posters here are posers!
Live the life!
Shut Up and SURF!
Almost everyday I see so many great waves around here go unridden.
Bring an attitude to my beach and the locals won't kick your ass the ocean will!
Aloha, Olaf

Surfing is what you make of it.
If I surf a crowded spot I'll just put on my cloaking device and/or my warrior face paint.
After living right by a famous point for years, I came to enjoy the fickle and uncrowded(and powerful) nature of my local beachie.

drljefe, It's good to have both cloak and paint in ones quiver you never know what to wear till you get in the line up.
It's embarrassing when all you have is your clown suit.

I see a lot of folks at Joshua Tree from the Beach Cities.
Imagine, for example, Todd Gordon running around Joshua Tree starting fights with strangers and vandalizing cars he doesn't recognize as belonging to Desert Locals? Or Werner doing the same thing in The Valley.
Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it.

I spent many years in Sydney, Australia. We've a surf gang - The Bra Boys - who 'guard' Maroubra Beach.
Their territorial pizzings are marked by tatoos on their chest of the Maroubra Beach postcode/zip code. They wear cheap t-shirts that say "My brothers keeper". Actor Russell Crowe made a doco about them a few years back.
Like many 'locals' on Syndey beaches, they don't like weekend/'out of suburb' visitors. Kept in their isolated thinking, some start to believe too much of their own bulls$%t over time.
Truth is that our boys are much like the ones in the Hawaiian video. They look intimidating. Look tough with their creatine and protein shaked arms. But they can't fight for sh*t. I've seen aboriginal kids 20 kgs lighter at Maroubra Beach give 'locals' a hiding in comeuppance.
Surfing has itself an average culture of testosterone fuelled dudes who make themselves out to be the next big "I am" - I've bumped into the hubris that is Kelly Slater at Bells Beach, he's no different.
Though surfing locals are not unique. The locals of my own village oft disregard visitors too. And I've seen a tonne of whinging and abuse at Camp 4 when 'non-climbers' have 'taken' the last camp spots.
I'd back a North Wall handshake against a North Shore rider anyday.

I was in El Salvador a couple of years ago hanging for a couple of weeks with one, if not the top surfer in the country. He told me about his trip to the north shore and what jerks the locals were. Cutting you off and then coming up on you on the beach afterwards. I had no idea. Alas they will all just grow old and fat.
