Reilly,
I lived in the Bay Area for while.
I used to be a Rams fan. Then I watched Jim "Chrissy" Everett hook slide 3 yards short of a first down with the playoffs on the line.
Next I watched Steve Young put his head down and go hard to get the first down with the game on the line.
Been a 9ers fan ever since.
Of course I root for the Chargers.

I thought football was over for the year a month and a half ago when the Saskatchewan Roughriders won the Grey Cup, but Mimi tells me there's some kind of football league down here in the US and that they're still playing even though it's January. Weird.
I doubt they play at a very high level, but I'm going to go over and watch it with her and Steve this afternoon.

You're right ghost, shabby talents these NFL guys. The real ballers play rugby.
I here this on a regular basis from my good friend and employer who grew up in the Fulham district of London.
Still trying to figure a way of telling him he's wrong without getting my wage cut....

An English friend once told me -- absolutely seriously -- that if you had to pick one sport that generated the overall best athletes, athletes that would excel at any sport they turned to, it would be cricket.
He wasn't joking.
I didn't know what to say.

Ghost, was he on 'shrooms? I could believe him if he had said rugby, or rounders.

That's what I thought. I could understand if he didn't know much about what it took to play NFL football, but surely he knew about rugby and soccer.
And I'll admit I haven't seen hundreds of cricket matches, and I'm sure that the top level cricketers are serious athletes, but...
Edit to add: He may not have been on shrooms, but he was climbing in the middle of winter in Scotland, with me, so he probably was pretty crazy.

WBC Championship, Caesar's Palace, June 1982. There had not been a white world heavyweight champion in 22 years, and Cooney would try to change that. Cooney was cast as "The Great White Hope" in one of the most anticipated fights of the early 1980s.
Holmes: 39-0. Cooney: 25-0.
My point:
Seahawks never have done it. Niners have. This will be a tough game for both teams. I'm looking forward to it.
Seahawks lose in OT.
My God, man! Cricket?

Don't know much about cricket, but assuming it's basically the same as baseball from an athletic standpoint, I can believe it.
The NFL players (in some positions) look more like the guy on the cover of a glossy fitness magazine, but the hand eye coordination and speed necessary to hit at the major league level is on a different realm.
