It has been more than a month since I had to allow my Veterinarian to euthanize my beloved Labrador mix, Lola. She was 13 years old and she has been my companion for 12 of those years. There was little hope in her getting well and she had suffered enough.

I tried to post this earlier, but just couldn't bring myself to it. Because I am a reclusive bachelor, my dogs are my closet companions. It seems like such a short 12 years, but all aspects of time seem that way with each passing year.

I miss her most when I wake, her eyes were usually the first thing I focused on. Her 5:00 bark for dinner rings in my ears and I still see her making her rounds each evening along the border of her 2 acre electric perimeter.

they will tell you another dog will "channel" favorite traits of one long gone

there is no cheering up though
We love our Dwagz big & small

Tears for
.Kohler (A Super Dawg, A water Dawg, A cliff Dawg that would chase & retrieve a stick a vertical mile!)
Tears for
.Boulder*
& Tears for
.Solo(8,years between the brothers passings)
Those last 2 were 'Thunder&Lightening'
I miss them all and always will!

Lola. Those eyes would melt a heart of stone.
May she be romping with all the other Taco dogs that have taken chunks of our hearts.
May your ache soften each day. Thank you for posting that incredible picture. Her light just shines.

Thanks for all the support for Lola. We all go through it, but it helps when others take interest and grieve with you. It is all the more comforting when friends you haven't met face to face feel your pain.

Emma hopefully will be with me for a few more years. She was Lola's "partner in crime", as I adopted her less than a year after Lola. She is a Border Collie mix. The pic below was taken after her summer shearing and some surgery to remove growths from her tail.

How is Emma handling the loss?
A friend of mine recently lost one of their dogs to cancer and their other dog, a dingo, has become inconsolable. My last dog was bonded with my cat. When my dog died my cat slumped around for a very long time. Actually I really don’t think he ever became the same.

Love to Emma during a hard time for her, too.

I had two dogs for about 4 years. Molly was definitely feeling bad for at least 6 months when the old guy died. Then we got another dog and that helped.

Susan,

Emma is adjusting quite well. Every time I pick up the truck keys she dances as she always has, but I feel like she thought we were going to pick Lola up from the veterinarian's office.

The hard part is if I leave home and can't take Emma with me, it is just to hot here to leave a dog in a car for one minute. I might be more concerned than she, but the look I get when closing the door tells me otherwise.

I appreciate your kindness and concern. Her picture was from April 2017, so her tail has long since healed.

Eight years ago today. She’s never out of my heart...and wouldn’t you know it, Teddy prefers some of Bunk’s old ratty toys to new ones. I wish they could have met.
