Free Wi-fi. There is another one, Wi-Fi finder, that includes pay for sites.

Finds the nearest free Wi-Fi locations. Used this in Vegas where hotel wanted $22/day for internet - yeah, right!

There is a free sudoku, but sometimes the puzzles repeat.

Bloomberg. For news, your stock portfolio, ...

Mainly I just use it for text message, email, phone, occasional web browsing. There are apps for PGA and LPGA leaderboards. Occasional snapshot, where camera is unavailable or shot is unworthy of real camera.

Actually I have used the Weather Channel app. It really is not as lame IMO as mentioned above. Serves current conditions, daily and hourly forecasts, as well as radar maps. What more could you want? If your screen gets wet, it is probably raining.

Both Blackberries and IPhones are a great improvement on the original form of digital communications.

Smoke signals, flags, and heliographs.

An interesting discussion, though - I'm thinking about getting one of these gadgets.

Can I put the new software/OS (cut and paste is what I'm after) onto my second generation iPhone?

Tom King, your neighbor Shanti has an iPhone and has mentioned problems using it in the dental floss state. So I sez to her "I think them kingsburys use blackburys."

Wall St Journal Reader
Pandora - Customized radio that works from LA to Olancha, goes dead and picks up again just north of LP, dies out again north of Mammoth
Facebook
Wavewatch - Has streaming cams (that actually work) for the local breaks, and surf/tide/wind reports a week out for most of the world
Mammut Safety
iTopoMaps - Looks cool, but haven't figured out how to use it. Figure I won't have reception when I really need it though, so it may go away.
Zagat
Wine Guide - Wine Enthusiast reviews that update monthly, and killer glossary with really obscure areas.
Snow Report - Snow, weather, and trail maps.
Surfine - For spot specific reports
100 pushups - To motivate me (hasn't worked)
Bar Trivia - To look like I'm busy when the boss is talking to me
Flashlight

Oh hell ya - iPity is going on there next!

I converted from the bbery a few months ago, and will never go back. Although, ATT does suck in LA. Reception is terrible in my apartment - never had that problem with Sprint.

OK. So an app you guys *should* have is Trapster.

http://www.trapster.com/

Trapster is an app that lets you know where red light cameras and speed cameras are located, as well as speed traps, etc. I've used it all over the Southwest and it's pretty damned accurate. Check it out.

yo jay, you have to download the new 3.0 software from Itunes on your ‘puter.
Hook up your phone after it has been downloaded and itunes will sync the new software to the phone.
I have the 2nd gen. and that’s how it worked for me.

Back in my UNIX sysadmin support days (it's incredible they ever let me do that, but that's another story), I actually had a customer or two who did that or some similar equivalent. UNIX lets you be god and dang it, if god wants to destroy the universe, so be it!

Free wifi... I will have to check that out. If you're at a Sheraton, the wifi is $10/day. But if you are at a W, it's $20. Both are Starwood hotels (I was travelling with my wife for fun). I guess the wifi is twice as hip at the W! LOL.

For fun and completely useless iPhone apps, check out Peesoup.com. My (and my kids') favorites are:

Redwreck - purplera1n is the work of a young man named George Hotz (he did the 1st iPhone hardware jailbreak at age 17),
but who was later kicked off the Dev-Team™ for leaking beta versions of the team's collective work.

This is more like it (tried, tested, true - and knott rushed):

So who is going to code the "Beta Master" app that will tell me the beta on any given route and know which route I'm on based on the iPhone compass/map gadget?

Fun thread!

Did you ever drink a few more beers HK and hit "Enter"? :)

What's up with the Dev Team anyway... They sure as hell strung us along on QuikPWN, didn't they?! F*#kers. Redsn0w worked great for me tho.
