Doug, what is needed to make the sushi happen? That is, to get you, your equipment, the materials, and competent helpers in place at Todd's by the afternoon of April 25th? Up front costs? (Covering travel, fish, all the other stuff.) Volunteers? Advance payments by sushi-eaters, or at least reliable commitments? Arrangements to collect all the money, to ensure that non-payers aren't eating (could be significant challenge, e.g. if 40 people out of 200 pay), and to be sure that you're paid for everything, and that there's something left over for Roy?

Once or twice you've in effect subsidized sushi events. That's not fair to you, and won't help Roy this time. If the sushi isn't going to turn a profit, better to know now. If you need angel investors, hopefully we can find some who are willing to take a chance.

I foresee challenges ensuring that only those who have paid for sushi get to eat it.

Yo Nature,

at most events you give an amount due to be paid by a certain date and we get the funds to you. Can it happen the same for Roy's benefit or are there factors unknown to the general taco public whereby we need to do things differently....if so let's help you figure it out to make it happen. :D Peace, Lynne

ps. not being pushy .... just trying to get the groove going.

Thanks all for your thoughtful contributions to figuring this thing out.

What we needed at this point:
Clearly, is a head count for those who would be interested in kicking in $30 in advance toward sushi.
There's no point in pursuing this if we can't get enough money, or close to enough money up front.

All the other details follow.

So let's start a tally here and see what kind of threshold or tipping point we can establish.
Who among you is IN?

Aside from that wonderful list of helpers/sushi preps,
Here's a list of people who have said they would be interested in sushi.
I will update this list here and occasionally bump the thread with it:

I feel fairly certain we'll make it work. One of the things that makes it worth it for me is being able to get the big box of fish out of honolulu. I'm curious to see what johntp can work out in LA. My Uni source is San Diego so maybe we can get a local pickup and save a few bucks on shipping.

If we have 15 committed we're half way to covering the basics. I'll do my best to keep it to the basics (no real wasabi, etc.) while still bringing in the quality. So basically after we have 15 more committed it's all donation for Roy. I'll be we do pretty well.

I like the Idea of wrist bands for anyone that coughed up $30 for all you can eat. But I also recognize that not everyone attending will know about the sushi so I'd like to keep an option open somehow for that.

and yeah... I got Julia's $30 which is the only $30 I got... so....

oh... and as I do have a good job I don't mind making sure we got it covered if it makes it work. but if ya'll's can send out a check soon that'd be great. Paypal takes 6% and it does add up when we're talking $1000.

I reckon I could rustle up $30 around here somewhere. Lemme go lift a few cushions off the couch....

Edit: $1.76 is a good start. Nature, send me an email w/ your addy.

I'm planning/hoping to attend. If there, I'm happy to help in any way I can, having had a bit of experience with such events. Whatever might be useful. Both the event itself, and immediately before and after - although I may have another commitment for an hour on the afternoon of the 25th. For once I may pass on the sushi - I'm thinking about it.
