Wait until President Obama has his first "use of force" incident.

As soon as Obama orders the cluster-bombs and the depleted uranium dropped on whoever pisses him off, we'll find out The Rest Of The World has the same opinion of us they always had.

With a fresher mind after an exhilarating night, a few more of my hopes for this presidency. Apologies for duplicating those already stated.

I would like to see a president who has genuine knowledge of and respect for the constitution. (From what I understand of Obama’s law experience, I think this is a safe bet.)

Respect and empowerment for individuals and their choices, no matter how challenging those choices might be to other people (i.e. abortion, gay marriage).

Some kind of progress towards providing a solution to one of our most prominent social tragedies, the lack of comprehensive health care.

Economic management that lives within its means, and doesn’t forestall costs for future generations to deal with.

A collegial approach to foreign policy, with efforts to understand and work together with countries and cultures different from ours, yet firmness and immediate retaliatory action towards movements that obviously have nothing more than violence and aggression as their agenda.

Congressional leadership that truly works to find reasonable compromises to difficult issues, and perhaps most importantly, actually gets something done.

Well, good morning : )) I see the world is still here.

Hey, just thought you all would like to talk about the newly elected President. I didn't vote for him, but I am committed to him as the new leader of our country. On a more serious note, just got done praying for him too. He has a huge job ahead of him. I wish President elect Obama god speed and wisdom in choosing his cabinet and other advisors. Lynne

I'll play. Here's what I expect:

I expect the people to support a leader who represents them in intelligence, articulation, moderacy, and consideration for the greatest good.

I didn't vote for Obama because he thinks he knows what needs to be done, I voted for him because he is a leader the country can rally around and someone I believe will listen to the people that matter.

I don't think Obama (or McCain for that matter) could make good on everything he promised us. I think he will get in there and find out the real atmosphere and work tirelessly for us. I think his "newness" is something this country needs - it's a new way of thinking and it reflects the current generation. I think he'll become disillusioned at times, but as Rigoberta Menchu said at a speech where I work (look her up, Nobel laureate), when we elect leaders, it's our job to hold them up.

Obama is someone this country can hold up.

Re LEB's comments - I don't think you should generalize. I met a whole mess of French Canadians in Kentucky at the Red and they were fabulous.

But then again, climbers are fabulous. :)

"Ugly American" was more of a joke about our people being obnoxious tourists while vacationing in other places. Loud mouthed, loudly dressed and oblivious to the fact we weren't in Kansas any more....

They didn't see us as terrorists, invaders and marauding bandits, which has been the case in the last few years!

It's just another GOP bullshit theme song that we "expect" Obama to Save the World. Saying it over and over doesn't make it a truth.

Obama, it appears IS here to serve. He isn't so egotistical to think he is omnipotent. What he WILL do is lead in the sense a TRUE leader does. He showed a remarkable ability to focus and stay the course throughout his campaign. He never stooped to low levels.

The man is our symbolic olive leaf. He represents US. You can rest assured he is NOT going to be threatening to veto bills that have passed through Congress because "he" disagrees with the people of the United States who are being represented by the congress. "Signing Statements" will not be his modus operandus.

What do I expect for the next 4 years? I expect a slow awakening of many people who sided GOP during this election. Not all, of course. But many. People will realize that they have been being lied to and manipulated.

People will be EMBARRASSED that they spent so much time bickering about things like gay marriage and bashing Muslims for the last several years. Some will even be ashamed of themselves. They will be better people for that. If nothing else, the Bush/Cheney years showed us just how powerful an aphrodisiac avarice is.

I think we will see a MUCH different presidential race in 2012. And Sarah Palin will be no part of it but a joke comparison to the (hopefully) strong representative the GOP chooses going forward.

Obama's crew showed us how to run a classy, on-issue, campaign. I believe his admin will continue the momentum with a similar term in the White House.

To Happie, Maculated and the other rational thinkers here. . .

I hope too, but am afraid of what the future does hold.
I hope President elect Obama can heal the nation's divisive
wounds and get us moving in a constructive direction to
help fix the problems in the US. But he can't do it alone,
and we'll need to be vigilant, to hold his and congress' feet
to the fire to make them do our will, not just that of the
big campaign donors.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of the Republican party. The only glue that has held its disparate elements together has been power. My guess is that it will take them more than four years to regroup on a national level, and that assuming Obama provides a reasonably competent and honest presidency, the Republican candidate in 2012 won't stand a chance. Particularly if the religious right refuses to learn from what happened, and insists on pushing another ideologically pure but incompetent candidate like Palin.

A coalition of traditional conservatives, the religious right, and working class rural and southern whites, is inherently highly unstable, even without the neo-conservatives. They never did have much in common except the pursuit of power, and a lack of principle or vision.

Here's the think about Guru's, both spiritual and Political.

They are human at some level and have their failings. They have the ability to tune into the transformative power of creation and bring that into expression in our lives.

I think Obama is a human with failings, but also think he may have the capacity to inspire and transform along side the great men in our history.

(and before you glorify the Lincolns and Washingtons in our history, do some research and image what the negative ads against them would have been like)

During his acceptance speech Obama said" There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president, and we know that government can't solve every problem." I remember just last week he was saying how he will solve all the problems and make wise decisions. Get ready for a letdown to those people that were brainwashed into voting for him.
He will place all the blame elsewhere (just like any other liberal)
This is not saying McCain was a good choice either, just a better choice of the two.

won't matter, Mr. Slater.

In 76 days, all of us white people will be told which mosque to report to. We will be compelled to put all of our money in a cardboard box and hand it to the black guys in funny hats. Then we will await further instructions.

" I remember just last week he was saying how he will solve all the problems and make wise decisions."

I'd like to see a link to that source. This is going to come off quite brusquely, but I think, Kelly, your reading comprehension skills may be lacking. I can imagine Obama saying something like "I hope to make wise decisions" or something similar, but to come out and say "I will solve all problems" and/or "I'll make wise decisions?" Fattrad, he isn't!

Today the market had it's largest post election drop in history.

Unemployment will spike short term as small buisinesses consolidate and protect their assets. They've already been told they are targeted.

Someone (or several)internationaly will feel frisky and precipitate a crisis that will require military intervention. If the first one isn't sucessfly handled they will spiral up in intensity.

If he tempers the more outrageous wing of his party and can keep from over reaching he has a chance to be a Truman rather than a Carter. From what he's written, that's unlikely.

The first to go will be the right to secret ballots in union elections, followed shortly by the "fairness doctrine". In short the biggest assault on free speech since McCain Finegold.

After an assault on the first ammendment will come one on the second.

He won't be able to raise taxes without further collapsing the economy so any control over the deficit is out the window. Every thing congress want's will be an "emergency".

The "misery index" will return in a year and huge numbers of seats will change parties in two years.

Four years from know he's another Carter.

Well, I guess it's kinda crazy posting a thread and not saying much...but it's been great to hear from all of you ! Sometimes it's good to take some time to think and process.

It was great to hear your thoughtful comments and thankfully hear very little bashing. Speaking of bashing I have heard from friends throughout the U.S. and the world today. The one common thread.... They may not have voted for President Elect Obama, but they will support him. They will give him the respect the Leader of the United States deserves.

They all agreed bashing lends little in helping our country heal the divisiveness that has developed. Respectfully supporting Obama's position of leadership can happen even if we disagree with him on some of the issues.

Peace tonight, Lynne

Again, Thanks for your comments.

No magic wand, but I'm thinking he might just go back to the golden rule.

What a change that would be!

Okay, that might be magical thinking.
