Actually, in the aggregate I've found people to be about the same everywhere I've lived (the southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and Cali). From this point geography becomes the most important thing to me--I love climbing in the Sierras.
It is just a shame the bay area is so far away from good climbing! While living in Los Alamos, NM didn't have the awesome climbing CA does it was nice to work a 5.12 ten minutes from my office at lunch!

I've met mr Sims, though his license says 'Greenie' he is clearly a Californian. Like him 'n Lynn, I was born in Illinois ( Harvey, cook county) two of my cousins have degress from that Champagne/urbana university.
My family, and the joads, came to Californee in'71. I move away often, sometimes for decades, but it keeps drawing me back... I do wish the climate was cooler, though....

Estimated Prophet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBXhQtC19mY
Lyrics of Grateful Dead - Estimated Prophet :
My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no
Been so long I felt this way, I'm in no hurry, no
Rainbows and down that highway where ocean breezes blow
My time coming, voices saying they tell me where to go.
Don't worry about me, nah nah nah, don't worry about me, no
and I'm in no hurry, nah nah nah, I know where to go.
California, preaching on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine.
My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
Still I know I lead the way, they tell me where I go.
Don't worry about me, no no no, don't worry about me, no
and I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go.
California, a prophet on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine.
You've all been asleep, you would not believe me
Them voices tellin' me, you will soon receive me
Standin' on the beach, the sea will part before me
Fire wheel burning in the air!
You will follow me and we will ride to glory, way up, the middle of
the air!
And I'll call down thunder and speak the same and my work fills the
sky with flame
and might and glory gonna be my name and men gonna light my way.
My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no
Don't worry about me, no no no, don't worry about me, no
and I'm in no hurry, no no no, don't worry about me, no.

I have lived in this sorry state for all of my 43 years. There IS NO reason to have an attitude other than a bad one about being stuck here. The only thing this worthless state has going for it is the mountains.

The reason we all come up with so many answers is because only one word accurately describes California.
"Diversity."
The facts:
We have ten bioregions, eleven distinct geomorphic provinces with clearly defined boundaries. The ecology spans six biogeographic provinces. Our climate varies widely, from arid to subarctic, depending on latitude, elevation, and proximity to the coast.
There are over 200 languages spoken and read in California. Including indigenous languages, California is viewed as one of the most linguistically diverse areas in the world (the indigenous languages were derived from 64 root languages in 6 language families..)
Etc. etc. etc...

Several years ago I went back to my old stomping grounds, and after opening my lovely mouth to say a few words, my cousins looked at me and dryly remarked, "How lovely, you're Californian"(The dryness should give those a hint of where I'm from)
Which got me thinking, what is the Californian attitude? I've been living here for the last 12 years, and this state is so diverse, and rich from
"Yo mother**cker drop those Nikes b4 I blow your ass off"
"Chillax dude, take another hit... ride the wave"
"Oh my gawd, oh my gawd, Oh my GAWD, my hair is LIKE so cool?"
to
"There's meat in my dish, I will now lie down in the middle of your vile establishment, and protest until you concede to my whims, "khumbaya my goddess, khumbaya...."

Seriously, I understand. I'm wondering if when I move to Utah I get to take my CA attitude with me...? Or does it fade over time?

California isn't an attitude, it's a State of Mind.
You can choose to be like all those other lemmings
whose professed hatred of California can't hide their envy and longing to be part of what they simply don't understand. Or you can be like a wise and loveable lemur...
and find your California State of Mind. It's in the Redwood forests and Giant Sequoias...
It's in the ocean and riverways that have sculpted these amazing landscapes...
It's in the mountains, cliffs and rolling hills that fill a climber's heart with song...
It's your choice. Remain a gibbering monkey picking fleas off your tail...
or find your California State of Mind and tell the rest of the haters to take a hike...
...preferably along the coast...at sunset. Then they'll understand.
And remember this: The beauty you see on the outside is a direct reflection of the beauty within you.
May all your days be Cali days.

hey there.. say, back in the 60' and early 70's, at least in the area i lived in... the "so called attitude" really wasn't one, then.... folks were laid-back, easy-going and actually smiled and were nice.... some folks were a tad on the up-nose in some areas, but generally there were lots of folks that still had farm and orchard areas and were nice enough to share the time of day, as "folks"....
sadly, seems it all got lost somewhere.. as years after i had left (due to marraige to a tex-mex) when i came back to visit, it was a whole new "game"--- sometimes complex, and not as easy to see what kind of bases were being used...
still, there are some great "pockets" in certain areas and folks are still just folks seeking to live life, share some time, and listen and learn as to who you are, and how to be friends... seems it takes a bit of looking to find those pockets as times passes on.... seems the buisness world is a hard place and its taking over, fast... oh, my....
hope you all find those nice "pockets" hidden about california.. .when you do, they are by far, richer, richer than "all the gold in california" (as one song goes)...
