"you will be assimilated", but exactly into what?
The Californian Attitude may seem trivial to those who are immersed in it, but to some it remains an enigma if not uniquely distinct!
So for those who are native or assimilated Californians, what is the Californian attitude?

Yes, it's all very confusing. One must always change attitudes when passing through various sections of the state. I've been here all my life and still haven't gotten it organized in my mind.

Alas, Salad, the San Diego attitude you refer to is the North County version.
Remember, we split into two distinct subcatagories: the No'theners and the Fem-Bots. A fem-bot is the term referring to the effeminate weirdos cruising the Gaslamp on Saturday Night waiting hours on end outside of The Bitter End, hoping their Faux-Hawk lasts the night. What this elusive creature lacks in intelligence it more than makes up for in complexion and seemingly-cheap-and-torn-but-heinously-expensive urban lifestyle clothing. In truth, if we honestly wanted to solve the energy crisis we wouldn't be drilling in Alaska but visiting the apartments of these oiled up bottom-feeders and wringing out their pillow cases.

Growing up in Ohio the attitude was: Live and think like me or there is something seriously wrong with you.
In California, for the most part, all people are accepted and you have the freedom to be who you choose. Live and let live.

When I deal with the least coast they seem uptight and argumentative compared to the Pacific. Must be all that cold Atlantic H2O.
Can't generalize tho. Flew into New York, pouring rain, no umbrella etc. had to find a bus to get to the the other NY airport. I was sheltered from the rain, put on the right bus...even given a bagel and a cuppa.

California, in fact much of the West Coast (with some exceptions, ie Orange County), has a much more tolerant attitude to different ideas and beliefs. Nothing wrong with that.
I believe that California attracted many free thinkers and people of entrepreneurial flair. People who were not settled in their ways, both in the way they approached life and in their philosophy.
IMO, this ‘liberalism’ is the same as the country’s forefathers (and foremothers), it is what made the US great and California great.
The bio-diversity really can’t be matched by other states. Temperate rain forests in the north, desert, Med climate, Central Valley agi-land, mountains, beaches, etc...
Prior to Proposition 13 (and a couple of other measures), California probably had the best education system in the US, arguably the world, from kindergarten to PhD. It may not be the case now but certainly back in the 1970s UC Berkeley had more Nobel laureates on its staff than any other university in the world.
IMO Reagan was a terrible governor for the most part, but he did help to build up the community college system (he abhorred giving the money to the UCs and CSUs, but had to give it to higher education, hence the CCs). He also helped to continue the building of the California highway network (other than that he was crap).
I was at an open day at UC Davis visiting my brother Mac (enology and viticulture) and I was surprised to learn at one presentation that at one point in the 1950s, California was producing one-tenth of the WORLD’s agriculture (this is including forestry and fisheries). I still find that stat hard to believe, one-tenth of America’s agi perhaps, but the world’s?
However, let’s not overlook Oregon and Washington, and for people like Anders, British Columbia.
While the climbing is second to none (at least rock) the Cascades have much to offer.
In 1843, had my family diverted off the Oregon Trail onto the California Trail, then I would be a fifth generation Californian, but as it is, I am a first gen Cali boy.
Here’s to California and the West Coast (raising my glass of Chilean wine).

All true, of course. You forgot to mention that the state of California is the 5th largest economy in the world. All these things in mind, we can kinda have whatever attitude we want. :)

I think it's this... "mind your own business and have a good time."
As opposed to many other places where it's "mind everyone else's business and get pissed if someone else somewhere else is having a good time or living by some standard other than your own".

Patrick, there are few climates and conditions in the world that match CA. Israel is one of the few also where you can add H2O and just about anything will grow.
No one has commented on my posts regarding So Cal's H2O situation. It's a complex issue but recently the 9th Circut Court of Schlameals in CA passed a ruling whereby SO CAL has to cut back their H2O usage by 30%.
To accomplish the schlameals goal thousands of trees have been cut down and 1/3 less crops planted.
For many years we haven't "watered" our crops....we drip or spray only at night so less evaporation...could go on and on.
BOTTOM LINE: ONE OF THE FEW PLACES THAT CAN GROW ANYTHING AND THE POLITICOS ARE SHUTTING US DOWN.
Now that makes sense. They just want us all on the dole. Right Arnold? : D
