No thank God. But having lived by the gun in days past you never know when it's gonna come back around when you least expect it. Don't dig it at all, but there it is.

Robb, I’ve got one of these:

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MAG032-1526-1296.html

Haven’t used it a whole lot but it seems to work fairly well. One round is loaded at a time and the lever is flipped back and forth as each round is loaded.

The other style drum mag has a removable cover that allows you to drop all 75 rounds in at once, then a spring must be wound up. A friend has one of these and sometimes it seems like a pain to load. I’d have to spend more time with ‘em to know for sure.

Hey those came out nice Tom (except maybe for the brass catcher on the Bushmaster, my bad), but they're called Betamags.
Not so pricey when you figure cost per round though (about $2.45), whereas at the height of the Billary Crime Bill Panic clips for a Glock 21 were going for more than $12 per round.

According to Clint Eastwood, "the ak-47 makes a very distinctive sound when being fired at you!"

Khanom, you want an anecdote?
Will it shut you up??

A friend in another state has a small horse ranch, 1800 acres or so, out in the boonies, no cell, no phone, only a radio.

4:00 AM he hears noises in his outbuilding.

Turns out two itinerant tweakers are not only scavenging for salable items, but are specifically looking for the iodine he uses to patch up his animals that have gotten fence cut.
Apparently it is used to make meth.

He grabs his Mac 90 thumbhole sporter (BTW thats an AK clone) and manages to corral one of the two while the other bolts into the bush.
At gunpoint the perp lies on the floor and, with a little unspecified encouragement, permits his hands to be tied. He is less enthused to then be hogtied but once again is encouraged to co-operate.
Then his head was chained and locked to a post while laying in manure.

This is the funny part. The one he captured had the keys to the junker they hid in a wash a mile or so away, so the one in the bush was just playing indian and hiding and watching.
An hour or so passes and as the light increases Mr. Indian is not so well hidden.

So my friend slowly walks toward him with the rifle and, now aware that he has been made, Mr Indian starts to bolt again.
Four or five rounds over his head into the hill in front of him causes a total demeanor change.

By the time he had the indian trussed up (and also laying in manure) he decided not to attempt to radio.

Normally he babies his pickup down the ranch road but that time he hit the bumps extra hard and laughed as he watched in the mirror as the hogtied tweakers slammed face first into the bed.
By the time he got to the Sheriff's these guys looked like something the cat dragged in.
On the way he saw their car, tried the keys, and when the Sheriff got back out there he found some interesting stuff in it.

Personally, the Mac 90 would not have been my first choice, but Clint is right, it has a throaty distinctive sound.
And THAT morning it was just the ticket.

khanom - you know i'm not the offensive fighter type - i'm a lover not a fighter ;-)

however - i do believe in a strong defense, and i intend to hunt game for meat once i move back into the woods where i belong. i'm also relatively pessimistic about the attitude and motivations of *some* of my fellow humans - i'm not scared of bears or cats, but weird people in both the city and the woods sketch me out.
oddly enough, i was never all that pro gun til the gang bangers started hanging out next door in this duplex (no joke - colors, pistols in waistbands, beautiful meth smiles, and a stare i have seldom seen in another human face...). i wasn't anti - gun either though - just neutral, not really used them besides hunting. now i do very much enjoy the personal challenge of learning to shoot, and shoot well...

so i guess in answer to your question - No - I haven't had to kill anyone at 250 meters yet, and probably never will - in fact, I hope I never will. However - someone comes onto my spread meaning to do me or my friends and family any harm, well, I'll stand ready and prepared as much as I am able to prevent such an act...

besides - I like the explosions ;-) Hunter was onto something there...

the problem with shooting is that in order to get good you need to burn a tun of ammo. To stay good you need to keep burning ammo......

To attempt an answer to Robb,

the only drums I have found to be reliable on a repeat basis have been in 5.56, but that is only because its my most often chambered caliber.
I have a 75 round drum for my AK folder (which can't fully fold with the drum installed) but have only emptied it once (no jams though).

Thing about drums is, unless you have full auto you won't be able to shoulder your weapon long enough to empty it.
So why have it?
(answer; prone fire used in suppressive mode while other team members maneuver, a rather specialized application)

But hey, drums LOOK cool.
The one for my Thompson ALWAYS jams (while the stick clips never do) but it just doesn't look like a Chicago typewriter without it.

I went vegaterian for 5 years so that I could keep drinking beer and keep my climbing weight. I am a hunter/ meat eater these days but quit the drinking so that I can afford gas......

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really are a Khabonehead!

If I have burglars, in the dark, near any number of tools that can be used as weapons, there's no way I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt!

How do YOU know they weren't armed? Sheesh, another self-appointed expert heard from.

Try laughter from my mouth.

I'd love to see you have it out with the tweakers using a farrier's cutter, or a hay hook, or,....

Brings to mind Sean Connery's line about being stupid enough to bring a knife to a gun fight.

This in turn brings to mind the rabid anti-gun mantra;"There is no sporting purpose for this weapon".

If some crackhead is coming through my door with an axe I don't reach for a .22 rather than an assault rifle because it gives him more of a sporting chance!

Its not like bagging a fish with the lightest line!

Why shouldn't the person in the right have the most indisputable trump card?

"So really you own a gun for self-defense because you have no confidence in your ability to defend yourself by other means?"

oh not at all - but I'm going to drop the hammer if anyone really wants to f*#k with me...

it's similar to my medical training and extensive med kit and all the avalanche gear for backcountry skiing - I hope i never use either of them the way they are meant to be used, but I'm ready and trained Before I need to use these skills...

don't get me wrong eric - i see your point on trivializing guns and where that attitude takes us.
I don't think anyone here trivializes them at all. You *can* have fun with things and not think they are trivial...

are we coming across as a bunch of hicks with guns ? is that what's bugging you ?

i'm fully aware that the average gun owner will use their weapon in self defense maybe once in a lifetime, if that...
does this make me wrong for wanting to have one, and wanting to be damn good with it ?

"So really you own a gun for self-defense because you have no confidence in your ability to defend yourself by other means?"

So I guess anyone who carries is a pussy and should be able to stop a gun wielding attacker with his bare hands?

"If you were really strong you'd not need one."

Sure, I'll pass on that little gem of wisdom to my cop friends.
