Edit...upon rereading what I wrote I think you were talking about my statement...It does surprise me that this was posted by a Calif....I didn't mean the quoted statement...I meant the thread! I'll reword it to make my point more clear! thanks!

I have to agree about drivers in Colorado. They are the worst by a country mile. Californians, as a general rule, are much better drivers, in part perhaps because they do a lot more of it. You can hone your skills, though, on those winding roads to the Valley. Galen Rowell once drove me up to the Valley from somewhere, maybe San Francisco, and he used to be a race car driver, and I was really holding to the seat as he sped up those curves. I then hitch hiked out of the Valley and caught a ride from another race car driver, of all things, one who made Rowell look like a beginner, and I nearly lost it a few times on turns above cliffs at 110 mph. Wow, was I glad to get on a slow freight home. But then my friend Tom Frost once end over ended his Voldswagen bus down the bank and into the river, driving out of Yosemite...

Drivers in California and Colorado are wonderful, and to compare them and create a rivalry where none need exist is to delve once again into that great wellspring of immaturity and petty competition... that black hole of contention, for pure contention's sake, and to reduce one or other of these areas is to reduce oneself and to reveal a very limited experience and perception.

Lived, worked and climbed in both states.I'd say it's too close of a call adventurewise, but man, ya can't beat the Valley.

I just can't believe that California types like Tarbuster, Eeyonkee, Raydog, Tom Gibson, and RickA have gone to bat for the other team.

Oh. That's right, I don't live there anymore either.

Colorado: Home of Coors Light, made from Rocky Mountain spring Water. Emphasis on water.

California: Home of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, made from nectar of the Gods.

LOL....did you really go there? Because if you did you might want to look up which state(as in ALL 50) has the most micro breweries.

As far as drivers go i'd have to say that Calif. drivers are pretty good- when they are in Calif. I've had them actually use pullouts on mountian roads to let me pass...which doesn't happen in CO.
BUT! transplant them to CO. then they are the worst I've ever seen, well except maybe the Texans.

Tell you one thing, everytime I go back to the midwest I'm baffled when people actually drive in the right lane and pass on the left.

LOL on passing on the right. I had quite a night of Debauchery at the Damn Brewery in Dillon and the Tony Fertado Band. My daughter was working there and I knew the whole town by the end of the night and the local Man. OMG

I love Colorado and can't wait to visit the ice and snow of the rockies again. Ouray is a blast, and my pal climbrunride is outside of Durango.

California still has the Range of Light and taller mountains here short stuff.

Utah drivers are an embarrasment to bad drivers everwhere. I was in Utah for about two hours before I saw someone spin out on the interstate on a perfectly beautiful day with no traffic. Inexplicable.

Colorado has good beer. Coors is as much of a Colorado beer as Budweiser is a Missouri beer. Next time you're in Colorado, check out just about anything by O'Dell.

I didn't mean to imply that Colorado lacks quality climbing. I'm just saying that the best places I've climbed in Colorado don't quite match up with the best places I've climbed outside of Colorado. And for goatboy, I can think of at least three places back east that are better than anything I've climbed in Colorado, in fact, other than the Valley, 3 of my favorite 4 places are east of the Mississippi. And 5 is in Wyoming. But I'll let people dump on the east all they want. Keeps the good stuff from getting crowded when I go back east to climb.

Flamer, I'm back in sync with your point, I thought you were calling Ament a Goldie instead of a Greenie, my bad.

I'm with pagen about the drivers, Utah is the worst I have experienced. It's not even a matter of agression, just vaqueness. I'd put (by and large) Cal drivers above Coloradan's with the caveat that you're more likely to be shot for your driving skills or lack there of, in cal than col. But it keeps you on your toes-hah!

And to whomever posted the lame chestnut/cliche "Californicate," have you really never heard the equally wornout verb "Coloradicate?" sporadically popular in border states such as Wyo, Neb, Utah, NM, Az and presumably, Kansas?

Having dipped my fat ladel in the hot gravy of both CA & CO, 15 straight years climbing in each, focused on cragging above all pursuits, I gotta say it is a draw. I've made wonderful friends and had such great adventures in both states, incomparable really.

When I am in one of the two for any length, I begin to miss the other area's particular characteristics just a lil' bit and they are just too darned far apart: I mean, really, in a perfect world the Owens Valley would be just over the hill from the San Luis...

goatboy-

umm.. you were right the first time. I feel real bad for those easterners who have nothing good to climb... let's just leave it at that...

Colorado's New Belgian Brewery supports every major climbing event in the state (and many smaller ones, too) in a big way. They make a number of really great beers. New Belgian is the Colorado climbers beer, not Coors. I'll pit any New Belgian brew against its' California counterpart, anytime.

Wish I was quaffing a Fat Tire right this moment!

OK, a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale would be much appreciated, too...

But it's not even close to Old Belgian. :-(

The climbing is fairly lame in Old Belgium though.

If you are really "ontheedgeandscaredtodeath" then you should stay in Colorado. This is because The Needles are in California and if you are already scared, well ...

Edit: Aw jeez Jello, don't resort to the old ploy of representing California Ales as Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Of course there are certain times I would not turn one of those down, but a good Ruination Ale from STone is what were about out here. Friggin' fat tire can't hold a candle to that brew...

Every area has its own kind of light. When I think of the Valley, I think of those words "Valley of Light." So true, and such a unique and rich light it is. Only people detract from it. Or they enhance it with their good spirits. I have images burned into my memory from simply standing among the pines and looking up at one of those incredible walls in afternoon... In Colorado the light is different but clearly its own kind of blessing and beauty, and having inspired endless memories as well. Maybe I'm just trying to think on the brighter side of a thread that seems to have been started for the sake of entertaining darkness. On the other hand the actual darkness of the mountains is a beautiful thing as well, and stars shine with magnificence, I have learned, in both Eldorado and Yosemite Valley.

Though I really do like their 1537 or whatever that number is (1096?) gimme a Mammoth brewery Double nut brown ale (?) on tap anytime.

Sun rise on 'scalito, or in the Black, on deto, halfway up shasta, in the superbowl over the cliffs of insanity (ayeee!), between spires @NM's city of Rocks, or from the top of the hatbox are each so good it's silly to fight.

My preference: New Belgium Loft followed up with a Sierra Nevad' Porter.
