The regional rivalries thread got me thinking about this. I know one of the mags had something about Cali v. Colo a ways back, but, anyway, which state reigns supreme for climbing? I know other states have stellar climbing, including my homestate of AZ, but many are one trick ponies and California and Colorado are the undisputed heavyweights! I say Cal. is better for the pure rock climbers and Col. is better for those that like snow and Ice. Being in the former group I say Colorado can stuff it!

Utah?

California has better weather. Thats really all I can think.

And Yosemite.

Haven't been to Colorado, but I would think it would be like california v.2.0. More serious, and less tourists :D

Our sea-side climbing, while not world-class is better than in Colorado.

I live in both Cali and Colo parts of each year.

California definitely has better weather. Climbing in Colo between November and March is a crapshoot.

Colorado has better accessibilty. If you live in the Denver-Boulder area great climbing is less than a half hour away. The best climbing in California requires lots of driving on roads that only seem to get more crowded.

The coast of living in Colorado, especially if you don't live in Boulder, is a lot less than California.

That's probably the main differences.

Utah ?

NO. no climbing here. no skiing. no ice. no nothing. go away.

;-)

seriously - i bounced from 15 years in CO to utah. I miss the people in CO, but the terrain out here is *sick*, and you don't have to sit in traffic on 70 for 3 miles at the tunnels outside Idaho Springs all the frikin time. Sandstone, granite, limestone, quartzite, conglomerate - all within 3 hours or *much* less...

now if we only didn't have one of the highest concentrations of mercury in the environment, or the largest polluter in north america on the other side of the lake...

My own 2¢, take it for what it's worth.

Less driving and higher trailheads in Co; 75% of the land in the United sates above 10k' is in Greenie country (look it up).

I'd call the weather a wash, it's too hot too often in Cali, for me..
On that subject, the snow is WAY better, overall, in Co. If you're into that sort of thing.

For snobby cultural stuff (that I confess to have a weakness for) Ca wins in a landslide. Speaking as a native son of Illinois, Co is still the midwest, no matter what they say.

Anywhere in Colo is closer to Vedauwoo and Indian Creek than anywhere in Ca.

The coffee is better in Ca.
they allow smoking in way too many places in Co.
There is alot less red tape to living in Co.

Though there is probably more climbing in ca, it is (mostly) a lot less concentrated than in Co. The Ca equivalent to the black, is spread out in a 400 mile swath with limited access. No Yosemite in co, but that's hard to find most places.

Either place will provide you with more new adventure than a lifetime has the capacity to accomodate.

I think either one has to work for you for your own reasons. Not like you can go all that wrong.

Both places make you appreciate various options in Wyoming and Nevada!

I've come to the conclusion that there are no rocks in Colorado.

If the climbing is so good in CO why don't they ever stay home?

When you get down to brass tacks, there isn't a whole lot of overlap to compare 1:1. Depends what you are into. Suggest visiting both, a lot, just to make sure you are getting things covered.

Jaybro-

New smoking laws in CO. Can't even smoke in bars in Denver anymore. Works for me. A few oddball beer laws, but easier to get around than Utah.

Have only climbed in Yosemite in Cali, so I can't speak for the whole state. Spent a little more time in CO, and there's very little I've found that is extremely high in quality. I'd say of my top 5 favorite places to climb, none of them are in CO. But for easy access, CO has got it.

Cost of living
My car insurance, health insurance and property taxes are more in Co.
Fresh produce most of the year cost more and is of less quality. (that has changed a lot over the years) we had to order organic milk when we first moved here. Before long they hardly could keep up. All them damm Californians Kalaforinakating Co.
Only slightly less hated behind a skunk and a Texan.

Car registration, two wheel drive cars -trucks, view land in the mountains, season snowboarding passes, gas and building permits are less. Travel time to most out door actives except the volley ball court at Moonlight Beach is shorter. No state license for general contractors in Co .
My Daughters are here so will I be here at least part of the time.
Driving home last night at sunset I counted eight layers of ridges from the hog backs to Mt. Evans. What a sight, no artist could get the depth the naked eye took in.
Both places have so much to offer it’s no wonder so many people move to both place.
I was in my home town Danville Ill a month or so ago and I know I could never live like that.
When I think of Contracting and Building this is the Wild West. The rest of the time I think I am at the western edge of the Mid West.
My option is worth what you paid. RS

Are you talking about that choss pile they call Colorado? Why they don't even have the tallest 14teener in the lower 48? Not to mention those Denver Bronkials they call a football team.

Can't wait to visit again!

Yeah Jude! Colo has no surf, piss ass amounts of snow during winter, and mediocre rock climbing, unless you don't mind being struck by lightning after 11:00 a.m.

Paddlefoot, how are spinner and Clutch doing?

Pagan, yeah pretty much the same wavelength, though I was looking for, 'You can tell it's spring in Moab when the license plates turn green.'

Burns, glad to hear that about the bars, it's a start anyway, esp, if you go to bars. I'm with you on the top five, though, though, there's still abundant stuff I'd qualify as quality in Co.

R Carlos, those insurance rates are more expensive in Co than in cal? or did you mean than in Ill? Maybe I have the wrong agent?!

Fred, you cynical sh#t, insightful as always!

Yosemite...........the reason why ALL climbers come to California. Many California climbers NEVER leave the state. (I know;.....there is GREAT climbing all over the place, BUT only one Yosemite Valley.....doesn't make it right...........)No matter what state you live in, ....all climbers have this need/desire/longing/calling to go to the Valley; always been that way, and probably always will be. Sooner or later, ....the pilgramage is made.

The BEST place to live is Chicago! A great city! I'm an hour's drive from O'Hare and an hour's drive from Midway. I spend more time in CA and CO living in IL than I ever did when I lived in WA, ID and UT. Yup, Chicago all the way! Just got back from two weeks in CO, camping, backpacking and climbing. My bet is that you CO and CA'ers are nothing more than weekend warriors--gee, do I work on the house or do I head to the mountains/rocks for the weekend? Besides that, I think you all are a bunch of desk jockeys addicted to the computer. Get off this silly site and go find something to do other than exercise your fingers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
