Callie,
Have a great trip, I'll post some blue water photos & bad TR for you in a week. Stay tuned.
Nice comment about the clothing. My daughter was laughing that I have a sarong from my first trip to the Caribbean (when I was 21). I was proud to pack it for this trip!
How often can you wear one of those anyways?

yo,
the diving is good there and near Akumal.
Jaybro, that lagoon is sweet.
I was out snorkelling one time and it was quite turbid, i couldnt see much.
A school of fish came flying by me, then behind them, two barracudas came flying by after them....That got my blood going. Cool place have fun crimp

I will be in Mexico City June 27-July 4, if you want to come up for some climbing. I was thinking of coming to Cozumel for some SCUBA. Let me know.

Diving in Cozumel is out of this world! I first dived there in 1984 (first trip there at all). Wow, so beautiful. 1.5 weeks and counting.
Sooze - have a great time. We can have two blue-water, lounge-chair-climbing (mine will be 5.11b no doubt) TR in the next few weeks - Schweet!

I was down there in April and it ROCKED! The diving was incredible. It was my first time ever in clear, warm water. And I too saw a baracuda up close in the cove at Xel-Ha. What a great place.
Two days ago, my best friend called me and said he's on the beach in Cancun and headed out to Cozumel in a couple days. I'm way jealous and want to go back RIGHT NOW.

Here's a shot of a barracuda that terrified my daughter in St. Thomas last summer.

Tom:
The barracudas are generally nice, but I did have one charge me once while I was snorkeling in Cozumel. It was SO fast that I had time for only one thought and that was (no joke) "This is going to leave a scar".
I was floating and looking at the ENORMOUS school of fish. I had floated too close to that school of what I now know were his dinner fish and he wanted to scare me away. He charged directly at me at lightening speed and stopped several feet away. I understood him PERFECTLY WELL and swam much further away from his fish, happy to be scar-free.

'Cuda's are cool and they generally leave you alone. I think that they know that, even if they can leave a scar, you'll probably win. But I'm sure they also know that you and I don't really want a scar.
Check your email.

Minor thread hijack: Has anyone done the whaleshark tours off Baja? We swam with them off the Ningaloo Reef a couple of years back.
I've heard mixed things about Baja, though, and would appreciate any additional data points.
Getting back to Mexico's other coastline, I visited Akumal several years back and really enjoyed it. The lure of the turtles meant that I never made it to the cenotes.
The last time that I was in Cozumel, a local dive company had overbooked an intro diving session. So, they ended up with two people per BCD. Several lucky people got weight belts only, and were told to hold on their partner's vest while they buddy breathed on the spare reg. These folks -- all inexperienced -- were dumped on a drift dive next to us, and it was entertaining, to say the least. I caught up with one of the divers afterwards, and he assumed this was what it meant to have "dive buddy".
Enjoy!

I mentioned this particular barracuda to the locals and found out that he usually hangs out under the floating dock where we saw him. They said he's never hurt anyone but he has startled a lot of people. My daughter only knew of barracuda from the movie "Finding Nemo" where the barracuda is a bad guy. I learned that they are only dangerous if the water is murky and your're wearing anything shiny. They're also dangerous to eat. Apparently, they can be rather poisonous.

They are definitely scary looking fish aren't they? Like swimming muscles with teeth. I totally respect them and am glad that they generally ignore the people. :)

I got a couple really great close up pictures of the baracuda at Xel-Ha. Plus a lot of other great fish pics on one of those Kodak waterproof disposable cameras. Then my wife accidently left the camera in the changing room at Xel-Ha. BUMMER!

Here is the actual TR part of the trip. Not much to tell. Mostly just lazy behavior and silence.
The place is as beautiful as ever. The adult only part of the resort had some fun slides. It was especially good that I didn't have to knock down any kids to get on them. Ha ha!
The ocean side of the island was in grand form - red flag sea day.
The last two pummeling hurricanes were not quite two years ago. Lots of the destruction was still evident. And I was really shocked at the difference on that side of the island. Previously there had been a lot more sand.
This is what is left of Punta Morena's beer stand. They've rebuilt next door.
Think you have a pest problem with mice? Check out this most excellent trash digger!
Waves were crashing all around. It was difficult to time the shot and I started getting concerned I'd be carried off to sea in an instant!
I am far closer to the edge than the photo suggests. It was a bit spooky!
I really do love all of Mexico. The people are terrific, plus I get to see sights never seen here. I just love the can-do attitude of this guy:
I did my trip and did not feel ready to come home so I stayed longer. What a luxury to be able to do that.
I just returned last night and am very ready to head back right away. I need to head to Houston for some stuff, then hopefully, before the summer is over I will go back. I need a 15 year vacation I think.

haha! I would like to take that bird home as a pet! I think vultures (that is a Black Vulture btw) are really awesome - very inquisitive and they walk sort of like me.
