Why do mountain hippies almost always like bluegrass music?

Great story Dingus. Lots of great stories here. This is a funny thread. Thanks for the laugh Ouch.

"But a tad lazy too ya dig, like a good hippy should. His clothes were shabby and his work habits were messy"

This is the only thing I disagree with. Its a matter of perspective and preferences. Most hippies I know aren't lazy. They just don't want to spend much time squaring things away. They would rather play music then mow the lawn and if the lawn needs mowing then they would rather have a goat do it and they definitely don't care if the lawn is edged. They would rather take that anal retentive energy and focus it on something that is fun. Like rebuilding a boat. Thats not lazy, its just a different set of priorities. Neat lawns usually ain't one of their priorities nor are washed and waxed cars or ironed clothes. What a waste of energy. I would rather make music or go on a hike or near anything then iron clothes. And edge a lawn, fuggidaboutit. Even though I was raised that way. I would rather play with my neices and nephews then do such make work chores.

The house might look sloppy, but I bet the kids are more well rounded. And yes I know that some hippies kids are ignored and maladjusted but that is usually not because they are hippies but because they have a substance abuse problem, just like the straight arrows who abuse alcohol and produce messed up kids.

These are all just generalizations. So please don't take them too seriously. I know hippies of all sorts. From dirtbags to Lawyers.

As for the music, its already been said. Its unplugged and everyone can join in. I like it but it isn't the only kind of music I enjoy. I love going to SF and hearing the symphony. When its live and its played well, it makes me cry. I love it.

P.S. Andanother. I wish you would find a different way to be. You are just being plain ol mean spirited. Why do you act like you have something painful shoved where it shouldn't be? Why don't you chill out, drink a beer and go to a blue grass music festival. You might meet a pretty lady and get rid of that plug up your......Of course to meet the girl, you might need to remove the plug first. Thats what the beer is for.

Some of my favorite music. Sarah Brightman, Hank Williams, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Mamas and Papas, Judy Collins, Bill Withers, James Galway, and Jo Stafford. Just to mention a few.

this is so random but...

Ouch- Orange Blossom Special is quite the test piece.

True bluegrass musicians are masters and should be revered as such.
True bluegrass is tight, unforgiving rhythmically & a completely different kettle of fish than the hippie-jamband genre... not that I'm dissing hippie jambands.

I am so psyched Tony Rice will be playing w/ Jerry Douglas & AKUS this week! Talk about precision & musicianship!

wow, I forgot I actually had other interests before climbing came along...

I love the soundtrack for "Oh Brother, Where art Thou". Allison Krauss is way cool. The Carter family used to put on shows in the local theater after the last picture show on Saturday night. June Carter was about 14 and she went up and down the aisle selling boxes of candy. There were never more than 50 people there.

Went to the Santa Cruz Bluegrass Society festival last weekend in downtown S.C. - a small but eclectic group of fans, for sure. Only 4 bands, but lots of good music. For you northern/central CA fans, the Northern CA Bluegrass Society is having a festival July 13, 14 & 15 in Hollister. Guess it would be pretty hot, temperature wise, but might be fun. Website is ncbs.us for more info.

I believe I recall Mark was both the Champion fiddle and Flatpicking Champion at 14. Given his time with Grappelli I think he's pretty unique at this point.
