It reminds me of a standard NE winter as well, but I think the Midwest got it worse than us.

We hit -15 here, then it rained. 0 the last couple of nights, and it's going to rain again on Sat.

It is the breakdown or collapse of the Polar Vortex due to climate change that is causing problems, not the Polar Vortex itself.

Here is one story. It's been happening for a number of years now;

It is odd that the media have been using the term the way they are. It really is proof they will read anything to the public.

Good video Ward. Remember 'Strongman Manwell Noriega? That led to a war. Can you say Strongman Manwell Noriega? Repeat after me........

Trivia of the day.

So my Mum grew up and lived in Chicago in the years 1908 - 1940.
She "walked 2 miles each way to High School every day even in subzero temperatures". "The Chicago River froze every winter. Most winters Lake Michigan froze too"
and other fine stories of winter related pain, suffering and righteous endurance.

Out of curiosity I've just looked up historical Chicago weather data from NOAA.
Indeed, there were a LOT of cold Chicago winters in those Good Ole Days.

Greatest number of days during winter with temperatures below zero:
1884-85 25
1935-36 24
1962-63 24
1981-82 22
1874-75 21
1978-79 21
1872-73 19

Greatest consecutive number of days with minimum temperature zero or lower:
10 days -- Jan 4-13, 1912 My Mum was walking about a mile to primary school with her friends (her Dad didn't have a car, there weren't school buses)
9 days -- Dec 13-21 1963

Lowest daily mean temperature
-18 1983
-16 1994, 1985
-15 1983, 1899
-13 1977
-12 1996, 1933
-11 1885, 1888, 1905, 1963, 1983, 1994, 1996
-10 1884, 1893, 1897, 1899, 1984
^^^
1884 - '85 - '87 - '88 - '89
That was a really cold period!

The lowest temperatures recorded in Chigago -16 Deg F and lower:
39 different days between 1872 and 1994
19 of them before WWII

Longest continuous period below freezing:
1905 - 28 days (my Mum was born)
1917-18 28 days (my Mum was indeed walking 2 miles to school and back every day)

On the other hand, It has only been below -15 in Chicago on 4 days since 1984. So some of these young whipper snapper news jockeys REALLY haven't seen it this cold in their lifetime. And how far have THEY walked?

I guess it would be unrealistic to expect that in a warming climate, the polar cold would just stay put all winter. We are getting more warming influence from the south as well as more radical influence from the north.
