Come on folks....all the media needs is a catchy phrase and they get all wiggly and excited. It was just an old fashioned cold wave, nothing historic about it. Some daily record temperature lows were set, but, with 365 days in a year, that's not so unusual.

An all time low in NYC would indicate otherwise. In Chicago it wasn't
record setting but it was as we liked to say "Colder than a loan shark's heart."
That according to my cousin. I was sweating in my backyard working on my deck.

by the way, a polar vortex Saved America.

Like any fluid system at “high Reynolds number,” the jet stream is highly unstable, and from time to time it develops meanders to low latitudes, like the one we have had the past few days. About this time of year in 1777, just before the Battle of Princeton, there was a similar sequence. On January 2, Cornwallis’s men marched south from New York City through cold rain and muddy roads to try to trap George Washington and his little Continental Army in Trenton . On the night of January 2-3, a polar vortex swept across New Jersey, with snow and a very hard freeze. Aided by the extremely cold weather, Washington was able to evacuate his troops and artillery over newly frozen roads and to avoid Cornwallis’s encirclement. Reaching Princeton on the viciously cold morning of January 3, Washington won another battle against the British and escaped to winter quarters in Morristown. Thank you polar vortex!

Yep...normal is relative. The average daily temp at Vostok Station in Anarctica in August is -93F.....colder than the lowest temp. ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Polar Vortex appears to explain the spinning turds of the National Broadcast News as they prattle on about the impact to New York - as if anyone west of the Hudson gives a crap.

Not particularly cold by the standards of where I grew up, but like Jim said, give them a catchy phrase like "Polar Vortex" and they'll run with it.

I've been in 70 below ambient, 110 below with windchill. This recent cold snap seems to be nothing extraordinary even by lower 48 standards. Chill out.

"Polar Vortex" was invented by the elitist propaganda-oriented media in order to deflect doubt away from man-made global warming ,which they have been reporting non-stop for years, and along with certain political groups, have a vested stake in.

It's an an attempt to cover their collective ass. In other words , by using a new Orwellian buzz term they are seeking to establish that extreme cold is an odd anomaly--- whereas increasing global warming is normal, status quo.

Relax Hyperactive Conspiracy Theorist,

I'm relaxed, not hyperactive, it's not a theory, it's observation, and it's not a conspiracy---it's what the media do everyday, like carpenters pounding nails.

Haven't you noticed, genius ? Or are you too busy agreeing with it?

As a Clevelander, the weather this past week has been more than idle interest in the weather reports, without regard to the name the system is given. It is pretty rare that we get temperatures below zero.

One gas supplier NE Ohio had a problem with natural gas pressure in its feed lines and many houses simply ran out of heating gas. A large community on the west side of Cleveland will probably lose its water tonight because the ice on Lake Erie has clogged its inlet. A friend of mine owns a large heating contracting business and his crews have been working 24 hours/day trying to keep up with the problems folks are having.

When it warms up and starts raining this weekend, we all hope that the ice will have melted in the sewer systems or we will have widespread flooding—which causes uninsured damage and pollutes the Lake. In the greater Cleveland area, we have miles of 25ft diameter tunnels several hundred feet underground which store millions of gallons of rain water to keep it from overflowing the sanitary sewer system and dumping sewage into the lake. When ice blocks the inlets, all hell breaks loose when the water has nowhere to go.

And the worst bit is that with the cold weather, the sky has been blue and sunny. Without the normal cloudy winter days, seven people were arrested downtown for smiling and looking like they might be happy. A few hours in a dark cell straighten them out and they were released to their families. Seveal enterprising folks sold hoods to protect weak willed folks from the effects of the sun shine.
