We live our lives, we make decisions.

Sometimes it not all about the events

but the moments you experience through out the entire trip.

Yosemite is special and its the Holidays.

Edit: Hi Happy, believe me, I have already written it off!!!

MF Redwoodman, it is overpriced and a tad schlocky, but the guests enjoyed the show. They were in good moods & having fun- which was fine by me.... I personally felt it was a nice change from a standard night of waiting on tables at the hotel,.. plus.. i made good money..

I normally do not appreciate opera, but i always enjoyed the singing,..i still remember the songs...

Yep, carrying a heavy tray of food to the cabins was a beast, especially with snow and ice on the trails to the cabins...yikes.
just thinking about it, makes my wrist ache.

edit for below...sempervirens, Thanks...and Merry Christmas right back @ you...
ps, Beautiful siding job on your casa...
Cheers
nita.

Merry Christmas, Nita! Dang, I missed the jester catching the rug on fire. Yes, Nic Fiore was always glad-handing everybody and anybody. I remember waiting on Ansel in the alcove.

Hi Nita,
You're right about the people loving it, they gave rave reviews and generous gratuities. And the Ahwahnee itself provided me with lots of great memories.

Merry Christmas to you and Yours!
Mike.

How old was Adams during the time you all were there? I never checked much of his age stuff, but thought he must have been pretty up there by the 70's!

(edit - I see he lived 1902 - 1984. I had thought he was of the late 19th century.)

I paid $850.00 for a single night at the Awhanee last summer, so $2300.00 for three nights in a private cabin plus dinner sounds like a screaming deal.

Back in the day there used to be a miniscule hole-in-the-wall bar on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the Ahwanee. It's long gone now -- like many bitchin' things in the Valley, it was too good to last -- but what a great little place to escape the madness. Anybody remember what the name of that place was?

The Diggins. Favorite stop for the dining room staff after a dinner shift.

Maybe The Eldorado Diggins?

Awahnee memories: Worked as a houseman there in 1969, and I actually enjoyed my time there. The little bar upstairs was really very cool, wish they'ed open it back up. I always think of 69 as the year of lost innocence in Yosemite so many changes after that... I know many who think the Awahnee is a kind of unnecessary eyesore, but I love the place. When I go back it gives me a sense of timeless stability. So many great memories. It's one of a very few buildings in the Valley that have real charm.

Wasn't that little bar called the Indian Room?

Some awesome stories and photos here. If I had the coin I would jump on this in an instant, it's a bummer that you have to sell them or go stag.

Sounds like an amazing way to spend Christmas. I have always wanted to see the Valley in winter, but like most of us east of the mountains I can't really adjust for the extra 7 hours of driving.

Best of luck to you, hope someone picks them up.

Yeah, that's it, the Indian Room, that was what it called when we frequented the place. I turned 21 in 1979, and contined drinking there until 1989. When I went back in 1996 it was gone.

This thread is taking on a life of it's own with great stories of past and dreamers of the future. Not to hijack CM's thread but what we're lacking here is wintertime photos!!

Someones got to have the cha ching and the time. I can't believe the Ahawhnee isn't willing to help you. The rooms sell out well in advance. They always have people asking. Well, actually I can believe that they wouldn't help. Its that whole corporate thing. Money rules and if they can fill one or two more rooms at the Wawona Hotel, or the Tenaya, then they would rather do that. Instead of helping someone save some money and helping someone else fulfill a dream. And yes.. staying at the Ahwahnee is a dream for some people, just like going to Paris is for others. It is a beautiful hotel in one of the most beautiful spots on the Earth. I do understand that everyone has different tastes. If I had that kind of money to spend, I would most likely go to some warm beach instead. But I still think that Christmas at the Ahwahnee would be special.

The Ahwanee will let him bail, but this late in the game there's a hefty kill fee.

Well, Fish Finder wrote this..

Thanks for the suggestion John but I already tried and they wont help, they have empty spots at all the other dates and shows and off site lodging that they shuttle you in from.

And I could believe that they wouldn't help based on the corporate atmosphere that has taken over.

One thing.. You would probably have to talk to one of the hotel managers. The reservation clerks are not going to be able to help. Corporate policy.

That's odd. When I booked the deal was you could cancel up to 24 hours in advance but there was a big penalty fee involved.

More Ahwahnee memories -

Rockin’ Gal has it right. The great little upstairs bar was The Diggin’s. The Indian Room was the big one downstairs, where you could recently buy a large, expensive but very tasty and effective martini variation called an “El Capitini”.

While running YMS ('69 - '74), I occasionally gave a slide talk on climbing to Ahwahnee guests, and Bob Maynard (Curry Co. VP) used to take me up to The Diggin's and buy me a libation to “lubricate” things before the talk. Lots of other great evenings there too.

The Indian Room was also pretty neat. The Curry Co. used to throw “Ski Suppers” in the dining room once a week in ski season. Incredible buffet. If I remember right, the ski instructors ate free. However, the booze and tips at the Indian Room before and after were not free and pretty well decimated the weekly budget. But there were some great parties.

Ansel Adams could be the life of any party. I was at a cocktail party at the Superintendent’s house in the early 70s with a bunch of NPS and YPCCo. bigwigs. Ansel Adams, after suitable warmup, got into a toasting contest with George Hartzog, who was Director of NPS and who used to be a southern preacher and really had the gift of gab. It must have gone on for half an hour and was astonishing. Absolutely Shakespearian oration. Good times.

Indian Room, Diggins, wtf all I remember is it's where we'd always wind up after a night spend prowling C4 with beers, then to the MR Bar for TNT's, then to Diggins for mighty rounds of Scotch nightcaps before staggering home. It's a wonder we got any climbing done!

I like the Ahwahnee Life.

Some day when I win the 300 million lottery, I'll just move in to a high end suite full time.
