I posted this somewhere else but here are a couple of pics of my home made SS 29er.
This is how she looked on paper
This is the adjustable jig I cam up with.
tube set
The front triangle
my welding (or brazing I should say) is a little to be desired
her maiden voyage was the 24 hours of old pueblo out of Tucson. that was a long ride for a rigid SS but she ran better than I. I was proud of her non the less

29ers are fast like lightning.
Put in 100% and prepare to receive 115% back.

T2, very cool. did someone teach you how to do that or did you just wing it. I'd love to build my own frame. You should post it on the "what are you building" thread.

Hmmm. You lads have me reconsidering my ideas of looking at just 26ers. Just too many positive comments about 29ers to ignore.
Edit: I forgot to ask how many of you riding 29s are tall? I'm 5'7" and so have to think the geometry on a 29er frame would be pretty different than someone on a frame that would fit someone who's 6'.

rockermike: I just winged it, It is amazing what you can learn from the world wide web! I have some steel fabrication background so the jig and fab work came easyer than the brazing. I got a bunch of old chrome molly frames from a local bike shop cut them up for the tubing and practiced my miters and brazing on the scraps until I felt I was ready to braze my bike. She is good from far but far from good! Any real frame builder that had a close look would prolly be critical. I have frame number 2 in the jig right now almost complete.
Fat dad: check out a 650b it translates into a 27.5" wheel. It is perfect for shorter folks that what that big wheel ride

T2. That frame looks sick. Always wanted to build my own frame. I used to shape my own surfboards and there's no better feeling than riding something you made. I assume you have some brazing background ? I almost took a framebuilding class from Yamaguchi but it never came together (he's in Rifle CO !!). Anyway well done.
Fatdad I would forget about 26" wheels, even if you don't want a 29er the industry is pretty much ditching 26" for 650b/27.5". Check em out.

26's work fine for the trails we ride. Most of the riders I know are still using 26s. From a little system of trails in the Sierra.

Fat Dad, as someone who has shorter legs and a longer torso and is barely 5'10", I opted for a 26er when I bought a new bike recently. Certainly there are pros and cons to each format. Maybe a 29 hardtail would be cool.
This is a super fun bike even if it isn't a 29er
