Pitiful, if you think finding new rock is a goal? Nothing wrong with cars and van but is that the question? I never called my van a rig. Is this a show on how to find parking lots with your new rig?

My wife and I used to have a Westy, which was fun, except for the unavoidable breakdowns. My pet peeve was always switching everything into sleep mode, then stowing everything away to travel again. This was made ten time worse once a kidlet joined our lives.

Our new rig has
-the same amount of interior room as the VW, except that it's a better layout.
-All the amenities of a westy except no engine, so it can't break down!
-the ability to be left at the camping area completely set up. The BEST part!

Current rig is a Honda CRV pulling this:

There was a guy in Tuolumne last summer with one of those new euro Fords that he had built in to a camper - supper cool.

I'm from NW Washington originally - we call them rigs there as well.

The better half and I both have the Hyundai Accent. Not well suited to our lifestyle, but great on gas. Once you load camping gear and climbing gear in it though, you are pretty much out of space. Hers is finally on it's last legs, so we are looking for a 2010 Jeep Patriot - not the best 4x4 of course, but it's all we can afford that will work for us.

I also have a worn out '94 F-150 that isn't reliable enough to take anywhere other then on short drives. It's mostly sat for the last 5 years or so, a couple years back I drove it a whole 12 miles, 8 of which were to and from the smog shop. I need to get it sold, but my redneck nature totally rebels at not having a truck.

Toyota Truck and Camper Shell. Very basic but works solid.

I drive a small Diesel Audi for regular days. Not good for sleeping, the gas mileage is fantastic and it doesn't carry much. In fact it's stuffed full with just the stroller. Still... We did take it skiing to Mammoth with Baby, our GSD dog, Bill and I. With a little help from a Yakima rack, packing small, things can work.

I get there way before the rest of you (and home sooner too) and can sleep in the back on my 6 foot pad.
Only issue is ground clearance.

I just bought this 2001 Toyota Tundra 4x4 with only 116k miles and a brand new frame from a factory recall. The fiberglass cap was a steal through Craigslist.

We also just bought this 24' RV for our upcoming four month cross country road trip starting in May. A bit decadent, but we are traveling with two corgis and my wife refused to tent it for that long.

We leave right after my son's graduation from UMass in early May. Quick visits to family in NY, PA, and Ohio, then book it south through St Louis and OK to the Four Corner states. Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, Grand Staircase, Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, Sedona, whatever else calls to us. Then on to Kings Canyon and Yosemite/Tuolumne, Sacramento, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Devils Tower, Black Hills & Badlands, then down to the Front Range of Colorado in late August to find a rental and look for work.

Come on man.. you can fit more then that into 4 months.. LOL I hope you do a rolling trip report like big mike did. Sounds like a great time. My longest road trip was 3 months. It was going to be mostly northwest states, but then towards the end of my trip a big blizzard hit when I was in glacier national park and it pushed me all the way south to New Mexico. I would love more time to explore that part of the country. I have been to Zion, Bryce Canyon, the north and sound rims of the grand canyon with forays into the canyon itself, but there is so much more to see. I know that you will have a blast. I hope you like hot though. Because its going to be hot in those southern states.

Cheers..
