I'm way behind schedule for uploading 2011 pics to Picasa... but here are some I did do.

One of a million beautiful spots on El Cap in January (with le_bruce and a new climber):

Mount St Helena in January (with my lady):

Parkline Slabs in Feb (with le_bruce):

Sugarloaf in Feb (with my lady and Jay Wood & Dave):

The valley after a day of hiking and climbing in September rain (with le_bruce):

Rapping off North Buttress of Middle Cathedral in October (with Zander):

Anders and Ed, are you factoring in the distance between the Chief and the peaks in distance, to calculate the azimuth at first appearance between earth and sky?

Not sure whether or not diffraction is an issue, depending on humidity?

I'm just providing data, admittedly not particularly precise data. Perhaps Ed is trying to decide if his program correctly predicts what actually happened (joke).

Anders asked and I answered...

and it isn't so bad... within 15 minutes... usually I would be at a place earlier, but I would have done all the calculations for the shot that I wanted days before... it is always good to challenge the calculations against reality, and Anders provided that with his shots, a reliable estimate of the location, and times.

I'm working on a different spread sheet now hopefully incorporating various things I've learned along the way, including an estimate of the sky luminosity to help with exposure choices and the like.

Wow, that is getting seriously committed to an avocation. Praiseworthy and admirable!

And I didn't say it before, but that Venus/Moon combo picture is pretty great. It captures in a real way the lighting conditions, something I completely fail to do with moon pictures.

I assumed 'Best' was singular although apparently I erred, as usual.

Here's one...not quite sunset but close - Fitzroy.

You guys are all, like, soooooo last year.

2011 is over. Get used to it. 2012 is here, and sunrise looked like this from my front steps.

there's no mystery in getting a shot, really... just shoot a lot and be mindful of the settings on your camera when you get something you like, eventually you'll remember how you got that particular image and be able to do it again...

...for point-and-shoots you can set up the exposure/focus on "spot" mode and then use the half-depressed button exposure/focus lock to get the exposure you're looking for...

in that image, I let the program mode shoot the camera setup on a tiny tripod but the image still had a "rebound" from the camera button release (not easily visible, but the stars have a ghost image below them). I should have used the time release to provide a "vibration free" shot... but I'm still not sure how to do that with this camera.

I shot about 10 images of that scene and selected the one I liked the best from the set for STForum.

The star identification is wrong, also, the star on the right horn of the Moon is actually β Capricorni, I discovered this looking at the other images and seeing the binary star α² Capricorni, actually seeing the pair of stars resolved by the camera... amazing...

that camera was my Panasonic Lumix DMX-LX5 which is my "carry everywhere" camera these days. I'm sure that Panasonic would be amazed at how rugged it is... a small lens scratch provides the diagonal flare visible on Venus and at the lower limb of the Moon...

Thanks, Cragman.

Changing the solute content of the water can make a difference, too, apparently:

WOOOOHOO!

Thank you for all those great photos!

These photos ain't easy to take!

What you have to appreciate about the previous sunset photo, and many of those previously posted: is the preparation required.

We had to find a clear western view, drag comfortable chairs to it, then drink and tell adventure stories until the sunset photo happened.

Then of course, we had to stay up to watch stars and meteors: while telling still more stories of narrow escapes and cheating death in this unforgiving desert/mountain environment.

Taken last night on frozen Tenaya Lake, after climbing South Crack on Stately Pleasure dome. No filters or trickery used for this shot. It was an amazing place to be at that moment in time!
