Thanks, Mike.

I don't know what my climbing guru's old dad score is, but on the rock, he's only regular in the sense that someone who's extraordinary is ordinary. In any case, I can take a belay from him, and I can take his advice, but but combining his style points with mine is cheating!

Quartz Hill, California: Paradise for regular guys and their families, with plenty of quality climbing, dirt boating, and scenic retaining walls.

Quartz Hill resident, and regular guy, Cracko instructs some regular youth on the finer points of trolling for buried Teamsters and rusting appliances. In order to protect the fishery it is currently catch and rebury only.
Retaining walls tend to spring up every time Cracko tries using the Homestead Act to squat on another abandoned lot.

And no, that's not the side of Cracko's house. It's City Hall.

Hear hear!

Jacko, I grew up on the ridge, just outside of North Columbia, not far from GV. Amazingly, no climbing until I had gone away to college and come back to CA.

What "regular route" is that photo from?

Ok, in fairness to my older brother Festus, I was a baseball phenom growing up. Made the majors as a ten year old, and consistently led the majors in home runs. Meanwhile, older brother Festus rotted on the bench playing in the minor leagues his whole career. The minor league team he was on was called the Sacs !!! We have given him endless sh#t about this his whole life, so it's only fair that he cheapshot me whenever he has a chance. It's called brotherly love !!

Forest,

The route my younger brother, Jacko, and I did was the regular route on Fairview Dome. The above pictures are on the Palisades Glacier where the Porter Bro Team attempted to knock off a few 14,000ers. We've succeeded on Mt. Sill, this year's expedition will focus on Thunderbolt, Starlight, and North Pal.

Hey, I wasn't the only one on the Sacs! (Young Cracko, bottom row, second from left. His handsome older brother is far right)

Trivia question for baseball fans: Name the old Pacific Coast League team for which this little league team was named.

I think I'm somewhere between regular and marginalized. I'm afraid my step daughter is going to be in the same boat with the Dingus progeny -- offering up warnings and explanations. Hey, "I yam, what I yam..."

Hey, just to let you know, the original Stonemasters were comprised of guys who were common as rain, and who came from nowhere in particular. That was the charm of the thing--it was all regular guys, and that's why we all mixed with all the other regular dudes. The climbing ability was incidental to our commoness.

And I'm liking that little league shot. I played all four years--8-12.

Great thread.

Forrest, I worked at Colimbia Hill C.D.F. Fire station for 4 summers back in the 70's.Ananda was just getting going back then, and "The Ridge" was well known for its large amounts of "Cash Crops", probably still is. Had many a cocktail at Petersons Corner. Where do you live now? Hey big brother Festus, nice Photos, makes me want to get back to the Palisades. Please don't tell anyone about the Horse and Mule I used to get to Sam Mack last year..... Jacko

Petersen's corner! Hah! Only ever went in there a handful of times. I lived way up the hill, up tyler foote and partway up cruzon grade, down Black Sands Mine, was the first left about half a mile up the road from the old Country Store (and the Fire Station that was there. Is that one you meant.) Anyway, about two miles down that rd.

My folks have long since moved closer to town (they live near Blue Tent School Rd off of North Bloomfield Rd) and I live in Tucson AZ, where the climbing is closer and possibly better. There's certainly a lot more of it!

But I certainly remember lots of the local cash crop around during the right time of year!

OK, OK, the Solons. I can get most of the old PCL without
cheating, though. When I was really little I used to always
wear an Oakland Oaks cap.
