The latest; had an abdominal ultra-sound and found I have an enlarged spleen, tomorrow going to have a CT scan. Next Tuesday to see an Infectious Disease Specialist. Lost 5 lbs since last week, not that I mind that too much.
What the heck is going on?

Karen, I am a physician in SoCal, and I want to reassure you that after reading your posts, that although you have a somewhat complicated thing being sorted out (and having a bunch of different docs involved doesn't help the confusion), you seem to be getting high quality care, and they seem to be expeditiously figuring out what is going on, without putting you at any risk (by putting needles into things, at least yet).
These things are not simple to sort out quickly, and sometimes the tests and such give contradictory information that must be figured out, and that seems to be happening.
Hang in there. You may (or may not) find this short article on miscommunication between patients and clinicians of some use, particularly when you are seeing a bunch of people:

Thanks neebee!
Well guys, this whole ordeal has been nothing short of frustration. Had an abdominal ultrasound, they requested a CT due to something spotted on that exam. Well, last week my MD stated the CT scan found some sort or renal mass in my kidney whatever that is, so today I am having an MRI. Meanwhile, this Thursday meeting with the ID MD.
Still have an enlarged spleen, still get sickish at times when I eat, have random abdominal pain, weak but at least getting a bit stronger.
My body is pissing me off. No, not on a pity party, was getting back in shape after a long lay off due to back issues and was having a great time peak bagging with my daughter and of course rock climbing (totally looking forward to climbing with some of you guys, like Riley!!!!) Damn it!!!!
I will update on what is found on the MRI, could use some positive vibes right now since I am horribly claustrophobic!
edit to add Thanks Ken, I have taken your advice!

I know how you feel Karen. It sucks. Some days I feel like I have a Fiat body. Fix it again Tony. It runs great when it runs, but damn is it in the shop a lot.
I hope you get well soon.

hey there say, karen....
just a fast check on the computer, while letting the dog out :O
will be praying and here's hugs to you, too..
say, was the back trouble, the actual 'back', or was it pain...
just wondering now, if it was related to the kidney trouble, and no one knew...
well, will stop in again and see how you are doing...
as you can see by us all, you are not forgotten... even though at times you might feel like you are alone out there...
god bless to you...

Karen,
Sometimes it just takes patience. Hang in there, try to rest,
find some good, funny movies to veg around, be of good cheer.
We all have to get sick sometimes, and more often than not
when we get well our immunities are greatly improved.

I have to say, it's hard to be patient with the system that moves so slowly...slowly as the end of the year approaches and another big fat deductible is there waiting to be met (if one is lucky enough to have insurance).
Of course, there is more than a deductible that are frustrating. Not knowing wtf is going on. Feeling like no one is anxious to figure it out while you are feeling like poo every day. Difficulty in making any sort of plans while one is supposed to be patient with the system.
It all sucks.
* I feel better after that mini rant. Hope you are doing well Karen. Thinking of you.
edit: feel a little worse being a bit of a negative nelly here especially after Studly's really nice post. Trying not to be a downer, but recognizing the frustration I think you may be feeling.

Karen-
Although we've never chatted back and forth, my best wishes for a prompt...improvement in your condition, if not an immediate cure. Climbers are tough, and we hang together. But sometimes even the toughest get sick. Get well!

Karen,
There are so many different kinds bacteria, and so many
kinds of infections. Half the time we can be suffering from
something and not exactly even knowing it. You might have an
infection, just something bacterial. It's my understanding we
all get these, and some make more of a presence than others....

My doc thinks a good portion of my health problems right now are caused by an infected cyst on my tailbone. I'm using turmeric to try and knock it out. The last time it was this bad the bone was infected, so I don't have a lot of faith that the turmeric will work. But I have taken so many antibiotics that we are trying some eastern medicine. I feel like I am 90 years old. An old 90 years old.
...
I hope that you are doing better Karen!

I have found that switching to a vegetarian diet helps in all instances of health. Just cut the meat out of your diet, not the cheese and yogurt though. So much easier on your body to digest that your body has energy to spend elsewhere and you will rarely get sick.
You are what you eat. Fresh greens, noodles, rice, sauces, fruit, yum. Dead animal carcass maybe not as good. :)

All you can handle!!! Without the meat, ya gotta get your protein in the diet thru soy or beans or nuts, or thats not healthy either. Man cannot live on grass alone, although Locker appears to do just that. ;)

There is plenty of protein in non-meat foods. The WHO recommends 56 grams of protein a day for a 165lb guy, which has a large safety factor built in.
Fruit has 5% protein by calorie. Greens, veggies even higher. No problem getting protein if you eat from a variety of non-meat sources.
There is no medical term for protein deficiency, other than wasting away terms for those who are starving. It's just not possible, if you eat enough calories.

Obviously the WHO is not training elite athletes. For strength training the optimal is much closer to 1 gram/pound bodyweight/day.

Not really. An athlete needs more calories, and will automatically get more protein. Just met a guy who eats only raw fruits and vegies. At 140 lbs, he can bench nearly 280. Strength comes from working out, not food. You will find the body is very conserving of protein. Long term, eating 165 grams of protein a day is going to cause health problems, like impaired kidney function and reduced ability to absorb calcium.
Runners actually need more protein then weight lifters, and still don't require all that much.
Carl Lewis, Martina Navratilova, and others did pretty well as vegetarians.
