Try to imagine someone else asking a sort of similar question about something you have an opinion on based on tradition and history. Now imagine that they are asking you to change your opinion that was taught to you by your parents and grandparents and all of your friends and teachers, etc. Then throw in some biblical texts suggesting that you are right to begin with and that you may go to hell for changing. Point made!
The girls have evolved, due to estrogen and evolution ...do bio-identical hormones count?!?! teehee!!
Geez, Bluering, keep holding those doors open for women because we love it. Some of us seem like man haters, but aren't, having simply given up on dating. Abso-freakin'-lutely. Preach it, Sistah.

Yes, when holding a door open, never say "Hey,baby". That's actually polite compared to some comments that could be made..!

my last boyfriend (white tech sales guy) dumped me partially because I was not the right race. He went back to lotus flowers. If that figures into a reason for relationship failure/success then (as you know) there's other issues at hand.. Sorry to hear that.
Just sayin'..

I love it when someone holds the door open for me, man or woman.
The key is: you do it to be helpful, not because of your gender or the
gender of anyone who benefits.
I rarely regret being nice (if/when I am).

What they forget is that anyone can be victimized anywhere.
True, but you shouldn't pretend the odds are equal. A lone man on a roadtrip (with a little bit of prudence) isn't likely to suffer more than being relieved of his wallet.
A lone woman is far more likely to be sexually assualted (or assualted and left dead) even with the same level of prudence.
Now everyone decides the level of risk they want to take. I'm willing (at least when healthy) to take risk climbing and in the mountains. On the other hand, I've decided that the risk of traveling solo through the back parts of central/south America aren't worth it, for me.
But yea, MMmmmm, extended road trips...

sully, that is pretty sad, but it's his loss. You're a very attractive woman.
Wait for someone who appreciates you for who you are, and don't give up. You seem like a prize to me.

Rita - I have used BOTH of those lines frequently (to the tune of some odd and uncomfortable looks with a few laughs thrown in!) and have owned TWO homes as a single lady (one of which was a rental property for a couple of years before I got smart and sold it!)
My rear gets cold sittin' on ice while I'm drawin' breath, and since I'm not skinned and strung up in a walk-in-deep-freeze, I (like you and others here) refuse to act like it! Again, life's waaaaaaaaaaaay too short!

Sad that we are so afraid of meeting up with Cletus and Bubba, of waking up with a gun in our face. So much fear in our culture.
You don't have to go back too many generations to a place where a lot of women didn't even have their own money, let alone be able to solo road trip.
Patriarchal authority is still alive and well. There are laws which deny women personal freedom that are pretty much accepted and unquestioned by many. After reading justthemaid's story, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a law in Alabama about women driving past their bedtime- ya got to take them into custody for their own safety, ya know.

There was a period, in about the 80s, where I ran into a number of women who bitched me out for holding the door for them. I was raised that it was polite to hold the door if you are just in front of someone, Man or woman. So I held the door for anyone, but this was a time when woman were very sensitive about how they were treated, and some deemed a man holding a door for a woman to be bad. So I got bitched out. That was southern california in the 80s, where there were a lot of feminists.
Most of that has changed, thankfully, as feminism has grown up. I think women traveling alone still has a ways to go before it is more universally accepted.
As far as the difference between different parts of the country. I think women are more empowered in the West, but as dingus points out, there are still plenty of backwards people everywhere. California has the San Joaquin valley, which is home to the redneck. Attitudes there aren't much different from the South.

niggard
Word Origin & History
niggard
mid-14c., nygart , of uncertain origin. The suffix suggests French origin (cf. -ard), but the root word is probably related to O.N. hnøggr "stingy," from P.Gmc. *khnauwjaz (cf. Swed. njugg "close, careful," Ger. genau "precise, exact"), and to O.E. hneaw "stingy, niggardly," which did not survive in M.E.

Hey Blackbird,
Riley's got the right idea. Go quit yer job, sell the furniture, get on the road. It's the USA in the year 2011. Go have some fun!
The answer to your riddle is this:
In truth, the men blathering about protecting women and "weaker sex" etc, these men are not really understanding what they are saying. When they say "protect," they really mean "control." Being "controlled" does not sound quite so appealing, does it?
If this was Saudi Arabia, these misogynists would be in charge. Take advantage of the freedoms you have. Yeah, get out there and have an adventure!

BB, your parents have every reason to be fearful and concerned about you traveling alone. It's nothing personal against you. There are tons of creeps out there preying on women. It's in the news all the time. Just tell them you're packing a nice loaded Glock 40 with multiple 15-round magazines and they should rest easier. Just don't forget to declare the gun at the gate of the Park in the event the LEO rangers break into your car for some random reason. LOL
Happy travels! Wish I could go too.

A safari vest will make you appear to be armed.
The safari vest has been done to death as a form of "concealed" carry, to the point where it possibly no longer "fools" people.
Punks who see you will bother someone else, and the cops can't hassle you without more to go on.
