Identifying Asian ethnicity is not racist.
The context the term "asians" was used in could be rightly construed as erroneous and racist.

Being a blue-collar redneck I take offense to that!
It bothers me to have the press label rioters as "Canucks fans." Just because they wear a t-shirt that's probably hot, doesn't not make them a "Canuck fan." Rioter yes, fan no.

Even better than the narration was this comment: "If that was Luongo, it would of gone right through his legs."

bk and goat,
I like to think of myself as a somewhat enlightened, new age, sensitive red neck and definitely resemble the remark.
Lowlife works well instead.

redneck is less offensive partly because there isn't a long history of oppression of rural whites based on their racial category. and also because st is halfway to peckerwood junction anyway.
poor & petty boojiie rural whites are drastically over-represented on this forum. add in their kids and you've probably running close to 90 percent of the posters. happy to include myself. and a minority but significant percentage of those are way the f*#k out in ted-kacynzski-does-the-aryans territory.
so it's going to be awhile before "redneck" becomes as offensive as other types of racial slurs. another fifty years, maybe we'll see middle-aged asian guys calling themselves' "Lemuel" and posting about peckerwoods running wild in hong kong. we can deal with that once it happens.
but in our current century, yeah, it's marginal for a middle-aged white guy to call himself "pakdong" (heh, i sad, "dong," hehehe) and post about asians rioting in vancouver. worse, it risks bringing out the real wingnuts who crawl around this place. and it's fairly depressing because vancouver already has plenty of racial tension. not a high crime and doesn't make you a nazi. but no, i don't like the new avatar.

You Canadians have such a violent culture, I'm really not surprised that this happened.

Vancouver's police chief is blaming the riots on "anarchists and criminals": http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Vancouver+chief+blames+Stanley+riot+anarchists/4958411/story.html He claims many of the rioters were the same people who tried to disrupt the winter Olympics, without much success. Over 200 people were injured, and over 100 arrested so far. I'm sure the police will quite enjoy trolling youtube and facebook, and security cameras, for photos and videos that allow them to identify the rioters. More arrests to come.
It seems doubtful that there many if any true anarchists were involved.
Enough rioters were arrested so as to provide a valid sample as to how they reflect the city's make-up, My guess is that they will be almost entirely male, aged 16 - 35, with many unemployed/underemployed/in manual labour. They will reasonably represent the city's ethnicities, perhaps with 'whites' and south Asians somewhat overrepresented, and east Asians underrepresented. A disproportionate number will be from suburbs.
It's sad, though. There are several hundred "civil disturbances" (riots) in China every day, usually responding to corrupt and heavy-handed local officialdom. People are rebelling, and dying, in places like Egypt, Libya, Syria and Yemen, for some measure of freedom and autonomy. And some spoilt self-indulgent drunken trash, hyped up by what after all is only a game, riot here.
I gather that the owner of the Canucks behaved disgracefully on television last night, when interviewed about the game.

Umm, Dafty:
A. Vancouver has its own police. They were helped by the RCMP last night, but prisoners would be held at the city jail, not by the horsemen. Wrong jurisdiction.
B. Enough of the dumb "Free MH" stuff.
And yes, Chara is a big fellow. Maybe they should have sent him out to quell the riot.

On second thought, a "Free Mighty Hiker Fest" at Casa Gordon has a nice ring to it. Though it might spoil the fun if I showed up in person - like Tom Sawyer attending his own funeral.

Well thats it then Anders.
You'll just need to acquire a factitious disorder and run a scam.
Then, at the benefit, you arrive un-manacled, contrite and tearful.
All is forgiven and we have an excuse to eat bait.

As I said earlier, this event will cause deep and lasting damage to Vancouver not the least of which will be an enduring stigma which will at a minimum affect professional sports and the tourism industry.
The public will lose it's freedom to assemble downtown and we can rightly expect greater public surveillance and frequent searches for downtown visitors.
Vancouver deserves to lose it's NHL franchise and be blacklisted from other professional sports franchises and events.
