Second that Messner nomination, though I'm bit biased by having just read The Naked Mountain. Hard to beat that tale as an epic tragedy and triumph in the high realm.

I agree with Skipt about Four Against Everest by Woodrow Wilson Sayre…24 carat adventure...might be hard to find though. There’s an old dog-eared copy in the Idaho Falls library.
Wizards of Rock: A History of Free Climbing in America by Pat Ament would fit the adventure genre.

Actually, I think someone did mention Downward Bound, Stewart. There's a sleeper in my list, missplaced among guidebooks - one of the best of all time, IMHO - Mountaineering In Scotland, by WH Murray.

Yes, Plaidman, for insurance and legacy purposes. The buzzards are starting to circle, and I want to make the pieces neat and small, so the sky burial is complete and clean. Still not wanting it anytime soon, though, nor expecting it. I feel a number of revolutions/revelations around the sun remaining for me.
By the way, that story that Roberts wrote about the Eiger climb, wasn't about Alex's climb, it was about mine, the route I call Metanoia. Alex never climbed the Eiger, though we did discuss it.

the six mountain travel books-eric shipton (im surprised this hasnt made it in yet)
endurance-alfred lansing (while Endurance is primarily about surviving a failed antarctic ocean voyage, there is some bad-ass climbing done in completely makeshift gear towards the end of the story and talk about an adventure!
