I want to amass a list of the all time great mountaineering and climbing adventure books. I don't want to miss any good ones.

Near the top of the list would have to be The White Spider and Annapurna. My wife insists that her favorite book The Magnificent Mountain Women has to be on the list. That's what you get when your wife reads over your shoulder when you doing something REALLY important. Personally I didn't think the book was particularly well written, but was interesting from an historical point of view.

I just finished The Stone Masters book. Really well done. Nicely packaged too. I also liked The Mountains of My Life - Walter Bonatti. Then there is Mountain of My Fear - David Roberts. Also by David Roberts there is his book Escape Routes which is a compilation of his magazine stories. I would have missed his story of Jeff Lowes ascent of the Eiger in the story "Mountain of Trouble". Talk about hair raising. Scary 10x. Not bolt kit. WOW.

After putting together the list the next thing to do would be to rank them in order. The greatest of all time will be really difficult to choose.

Thanks. I would have missed this one as the book is out of print. But I did find it at these resellers -http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0312699859/ref=tmm_pap_used_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=used

And Savage Arena is also in The Boardman Tasker Omnibus: - http://www.amazon.com/Boardman-Tasker-Omnibus-Shining-Mountain/dp/1898573123

Yeah that "Minus 148". How many people could pull that off and survive well enough even to write a book.

I did some digging and found that "Kolsås: Klatreparadis og naturperle" translates to Kolsås: The Relationship between a Mountain and its People.
I did find some good stuff on page 7 and 8. This looks like a term paper to me. I could be wrong.

One of the best adventure books I've ever read, Caverns Measureless to Man by Sheck Exley, but not a climbing book so ignore this.

Ed Veisturs book K2 is fantastic. It details historic expeditions, triumphs and tragedies, and gives a very detailed description of the mountain and all of it's obstacles!

Into Thin Air and Touching the Void were already mentioned.

Right now I'm reading Eiger Obsession, but I won't be able to comment on it for a few weeks...but so far it's pretty good!

We need Dolomite to weight in here, but I really liked 'Killing Dragons' by Fergus Fleming, a history of European moutaineering...the other titles mentioned upthread are very good as well. There are so many great books to consider for inclusion. This thread has been done before...
