I am glad it worked out. All my co-workers were amazed how how quickly the climbing community came together to help one of our own.

Just a quick update and little background info.....

The way I came across Caz's gear was some of our guys conducted a probation search on one of our local problem children a few days before his probation ended. The search revealed Caz's gear. They seized the gear knowing the guy was not a climber and believed it was stolen. Using the Taco, I was able to locate the rightful owner and get the gear returned.

Bad guy has since plead guilty to possession of stolen property and is serving 3 years in prison for it.

Since I met Caz, I have been climbing with him several times and meeting more climbers. One of the trips was a weekend trip to Joshua Tree that involved many beers, and one of the best stories I have ever heard.

Sorry I had to wait so long to tell the story, but had to let the case wind through the court system.

Again thanks for everyone's help.

So Eric, did you climb before this whole situation happened? Or did you just sign up here to try to find the owner of the stolen gear?
Great job by the way, you and your team of guys do the community a great service and probably don't get much thanks in return.

great story, great outcome! I have a personal "happy ending" gear theft story as well, though not involving my whole rack. The story is told in the "Climbing Life" section of Alpinist 31 (the latest issue), titled "The Flask," written by an old climbing partner of mine. Check it out.

Nostradamas, I started climbing a few years ago in an attempt to get over my extreme fear of heights. Now I only have a very HEALTHY respect for them. Don't climb as much or as hard as I would like. It is hard to get out as much as I like due to work, family, and the like.

The climbing community has been great to me and for me. Glad this worked out well for everyone! (Well everyone except the tweek!)

Me Climb: I have an old drinking buddy that worked his way up through the Seattle Police force and became a Homicide Detective.

I had known the guy and his wife for 20 years, but had never done anything more extreme than fly-fishing in the out of doors with them.

Ten years back, we took them backpacking in the Idaho Sawtooths.

Our version of backpacking was not what they expected.

Tom the fearless detective: turned into “Frankensteins monster” at the first moderate talus slope, and slowly lurched up, obviously very scared of the slight exposure.

We very slowly proceeded off-trail up to our camp-spot.

The next day was the “light mountaineering” day.

They made it to the next lake above camp, while we bagged a minor peak.

That night Tom confessed he was scared of heights , and told several stories where he had to overcome his fears to do his detective job.

Think pursuit up outside fire escapes, and climbing the outside ladder up to a small room on a merchant ships highest point, where a guy had OD’ed.

I am amazed he was able to do that stuff after watching him on moderate ground in the mountains.

Dude! Thanks for catching the felon!

I know I thank you all the time for getting my gear back to me, but Thanks you again!

Not only did I get my gear out of all of this but more important, I gained a great friend too.

Eric is a great guy! He's also been there for me while I'm going through a very hard time in my personal life these past few weeks. I truly think that my gear was stolen so we could meet...

Thanks again for getting a D-bag off the streets, and please let the guys that did the bust I said thank you!

By the way, that gear got me up a wall a month ago...

It is funny how many cops are afraid of heights....only been a couple of the guys at work who have climbed with me. My fear of heights has always been bad, but got worse after my brother was killed in a work place fall. It does help me know that just about everyone I climb with gets very "cautious" at heights.

Zac, I also believe your gear was stuff was stolen so we would meet.

Fatty, LASO Norwalk arrested our bad guy for his warrant. Unfortunately he was not home when we hit the pad so we did not have the pleasure of taking him to jail.
