Population, and Ignorance....If you shop at wallmart your are putting your neighbors out of work, Enjoy your short term cheap prices and I'll see you in hell.....Moron. Or more likely at the local crags where you'll be sportin your $5 dollar chinese made pile top Biatch. You make me sick you short sighted cheap, sport climber.

Wallmart will order 10k items from a manufacture at a certain price then upon delivery will force said Manufacturer to accept down to .60 on the dollar......putting them out of business.Sam was a Knasty Bastard.. Basically

I get just about every outdoor brand very inexpensively in my profession. Before I started working at a gear shop, I would stop by walmart frequently for some crap to carry my gear in or climb in.

Found out pretty fast that while the 25 dollar walmart pack lasts about a month, I still have every pack i've ever bought from black diamond, arcteryx, granite gear, you name it.

Even when (gasp!) I don't get a decent deal on good gear, I won't be buying at walmart again. but not because i'm a snob! its because I am lazy and hate buying the same thing twice ;D

good gear is hard to come by.

"Here in The Big City, there's always going to be enough competition to keep Wal Mart cheap."

But W/Mart's average store is located nowhere NEAR "the Big City." While they DO try to come into places like NYC(which has staved them off to date), they specialize in finding locales near major hwy exits for midsize-town metro america. They demand breaks on tax, zoning and just about everything else, gto build these monstrously oversized depots of consumption.

When a W/Mart (or WM type biz) decides that spot isn't conducive to their needs any longer, they walk away. And the hulking thing remains empty, for no other business can support such massive space. Empty and depressed, left to decay and allow whomever will to take up residence, dump trash, vandalize, what ever. Leaving a blighted scar where the once "Wonderful Wally" used to be. Toxic

Their tactic of squeezing the supplier, described above, is absolutely true. They do NOT stand behind the commitments they make - in price agreed upon OR in quantity ordered. While they, simultaneously, require vendors to accept terms of penalty for each day late on shipment.

WMart tents cost $30 in PART because they knock off the BD and others who have paid for the R&D to make the designs. No R&D costs of COURSE the cost is going to be less. Also inferior materials on EVERY count: threads, seam sealers, zippers, zip heads, poles, connectors.

WMart - and all the other Big Boxers - have no shame. The money they promise to bring to these places they come into is a falsehood. They TAKE the money out, and this has been shown over and over and over via reliable sources. It is NOT propaganda.

Supporting Walmart IS supporting the destruction of our society, whether you want to admit it or not. And while I do understand a person struggling to make ends meet is going to choose the WM special price on chicken over the local butcher(if one still exists), those who can afford the choice and go with WMart are doing a grave disservice to their community.

Exactly - the markdown spiral is part of the equation. As are sales. As is theft, display use and shop wear. Any seller with a brain considers these things in developing their initial selling price.

You're scary!

I thought this was America. Free enterprise and all. What are we, hypocrites? If you want to talk about short-sighted, what about our generation's use of fossil fuels at $3/gal. As though there's an unlimited supply of the stuff. It's all going to be gone within 75 years (3 generations). A totally non-renewable resource. Any effort to preserve it (for future generations, security, etc.) is met with anger, outrage.

Like population, it's the 800 pound gorilla in the room that nobody wants to talk about.

And so many are whining about Walmart practices. Please, look in the mirror!

I see what you are doing, HFCS. Can't you just shoot straight?

In other news, Richard Heinberg has finally thrown in the towel. He will no longer be trying to wake people up. It has become painfully obvious that sleep-walking off the cliff is what the majority demands.

Hey fructose I'm Snipped and have paid for 3 abortions....Yes I'm doing something about population but I try Knott to buy from Walmart. Enjoy your Chinese made ( At $1.71 a day) lawn chair.
I have been an advocate of alternative fuels and energy from the 70's, and finally because of economics I'm able to install solar panels and increased insulation in Reno homes.
They call me Montana scary but actually I'm from Detroit...."The city of brotherly Love" or was it "We kill em' and then eat them", Burp. Take care this is in good Phun.....Climb on.

With the exception of Trader Joe's and an occasional Safeway visit for cheap Sierra Nevada, I try to support locally owned and operated business. Those with locally grown/made items and a reasonable carbon footprint.

I once visited a wALMART IN mADERA ON MY WAY TO CLIMB IN THE bALLS. sCARY F-N PLACE, i THOUGHT i HAD ENTERED THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Unfortunately, it will delay the inevitable for about a half second.
